Lady Gaga is clearly the biggest winner of the night thus far, lapping up every award she is announced for. The singer is tied with Ariana Grande for most nominations at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, leading the pack with nine nods each. And she can now add the award for Artist of the Year to her growing collection.

The singer's latest album, 'Chromatica', dropped to critical acclaim and commercial success. The song saw Gaga return to her dance-pop roots after a detour where she explored a variety of genres and styles. Blending in elements of house, disco and electronica, 'Chromatica' was hailed as a return to true form for the singer. But what it was really praised for were its lyrics that saw Gaga address topics like mental health, depression, loneliness, finding love through hardship, the trauma of sexual assault and self-worth. The album additionally featured guest vocals from Blackpink, Grande, and Elton John.

For many, the Artist of the Year is a well-deserved award for Gaga following her highly successful 'Chromatica' run. As one fan stated, "You deserve everything queen."

Others couldn't help but celebrate Gaga on a night where she seemed to spend more time on the stage than off it. "HERE WE GO AGAIN GAGA YAS QUEEN," tweeted one fan as Gaga stepped up to accept her Album of the Year award. Another fan stated, "Lady Gaga is like BTS on award show, winning everything on every nomination they had," while one fan declared, "They should just call it the 2020 Lady Gaga Music Awards."

Not everyone was celebrating Gaga's wins, however. The other nominations for the category included DaBaby, Justin Bieber, Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone, and The Weeknd and evidently, fans of the other nominees did not believe they deserved to lose to Gaga. One viewer, apparently incensed by Gaga's age in addition to her win, ranted, "@MTV @vmas y’all hoed the @DaBabyDaBaby take that award from @ladygaga and put her back in the nursing home," while another accused the singer of buying her win, stating, "Aren’t u even the tiniest bit ashamed that u paid for all of these awards? At least act shocked @ladygaga." And another viewer said, "Gaga just won Artist of the Year and FOR WHAT???$/&: RELEASING RAIN ON ME??? BYE.' referring to her winning collaboration with Ariana Grande.
