The MTV Video Music Awards was one of the most anticipated award shows this year and it did live up to the hype. As far as live audiences go, the show had kept its options open, to have either “limited” or “no” audience at the sites where performances took place on Sunday, August 30. From a breathtaking performance by The Weeknd to BTS' 'Dynamite' — the show was amazing.

The award ceremony was hosted by actress, singer and talk show personality Keke Palmer. Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga led the nominations with nine nominations each. And, it was raining awards for them. They won Best Collaboration and Song of the Year for 'Rain On Me'. Now, the Best Cinematography award went to Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande – ‘Rain on Me’ (DOP: Michael Merriman).

Fans took to Twitter to weigh in on the news. One said, "Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's "Rain On Me" has won the MTV VMA for Best Cinematography This award goes to the artists as well as the cinematographer/director of photography. Yes, it does. This is Lady Gaga's 18th MTV VMA This is Ariana Grande's 9th MTV VMA."

"Gaga wins her fifth moonman of the night in the Best Cinematography category!," said another.

Another fan commented, "Ariana Grande literally went from being a Lady Gaga’ stan into winning the same award with her. Congratulations @ArianaGrande @ladygaga for winning “Song of the Year” “Best Cinematography” and “Best Collaboration” with “Rain on Me” #VMAs."

There were a few disagreements about the winner as well.

One user questioned, "I would just like someone to explain how rain on me beat old me for best cinematography. no disrespect to the artists but the rom vid was just them dancing to the song while the old me video had an entire plot line just to show how far 5sos have come."

Another quipped, "Rain on me win best cinematography ... ok this sh*t is rigged."

The other nominees in the category included 5 Seconds of summer’s ‘Old Me’ (DOP: Kieran Fowler), Camila Cabello’s (ft DaBaby) ‘My Oh My’ (DOP: Scott Cunningham), Billie Eilish’s ‘All the Good Girls Go to Hell’ (DOP: Christopher Probst), Katy Perry’s  ‘Harleys in Hawaii’ (DOP: Arnau Valls) and The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ (DOP: Oliver Millar).

Until now, Harris Savides had the highest wins with three. Pascal Lebègue, Daniel Pearl, Mark Plummer and Scott Cunningham all of them had two wins each. The most nominated director of photography was Daniel Pearl with nine nominations, followed by Martin Coppen and Christopher Probst with six. The performers whose videos won the most awards were Madonna and Beyoncé. Madonna's videos have received the most nominations with 10. Ryan Lewis is also the only performer to have won a Moonman in this category for his work as a director of photography for the ‘Can't Hold Us’ video in 2013. Jared Leto (‘Hurricane’) is the only other performer to have been nominated for his work in this category.

Some of the big performances of the night included artistes Black Eyed Peas, BTS, CNCO, Doja Cat and Miley Cyrus among others.
