The most awaited musical night of the year, MTV Video Music Awards 2020, aired on MTV from different locations across New York City on Sunday, August 30. The annual music event, which was originally scheduled to be held at Barclays Center with "limited or no audience," is now being conducted in the outdoor format due to coronavirus-induced restrictions.

The 'Hustlers' actress Keke Palmer was serving as the host for the starry night, which was graced by delightful performances by some of the biggest stars of the music realm such as the South Korean band BTS, marking their first performance at the MTV Music Awards. Miley Cyrus, Maluma, DaBaby, and Black Eyed Peas also headlined the night. Presenters for the night include Bella Hadid, Drew Barrymore, Jaden Smith, Machine Gun Kelly, among others.

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande led with nine nods each, while Billie Eilish and The Weeknd were next in the line with six apiece. These musicians along with Taylor Swift, Eminem, Future/Drake, and Juice WRLD were competing for the Video of the Year award. However, the last award for the night was presented to The Weeknd, marking his second win at the 202 MTV Music Video Awards after bagging the R&B award.

While this brought relief to some fans who were thoroughly disappointed with the fact that the singer had only won one award, a few noted that they were taken aback. One Twitter user said in their tweet that they were rather "shocked" to see The Weeknd win the Video of the Year as they didn't expect it to be given to him, although his video for 'Blinding Lights' deserved it. The tweet read, "Finally I’m shocked that The Weeknd won video of the year, because it actually was the best made video of the year. That doesn’t happen."

Seconding the previous tweet, one Twitter user noted, "Yesss!!! I'm so happy!!! After all the thieving @theweeknd won the nights biggest Award! I'm so happy for him. He was robbed so many times but he got the main prize. Video Of The Year."

In his second acceptance as well, The Weeknd stated that it was hard for him to celebrate as he went on to seek justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor, using the platform to draw more attention to the Black Lives Matter movement.
