Taylor Swift has bagged the award for Best Direction for ‘The Man’, a music video by Republic Records and directed by herself. Celebrating her win from home, the 30-year-old, thanking her fans said: “I really want to thank the fans. You are the reason why Industry cares about anything I do. I am taken aback by your generosity towards me.” The video was tweeted by MTV that read: Taylor Swift just won Best Direction for her ‘The Man’ music video at the 2020 VMA! After surprise dropping her eighth album ‘Folklore’ last month, she thanked Swifties for everything they've done for her this summer.

The official music video for "The Man" was released on February 27, 2020, directed by Swift herself, marking her solo directorial debut. The video has Swift in her theoretical male alter-ego named "Tyler Swift", voiced by Dwayne Johnson, presenting several examples of sexist double standards prevailing in society. The video thematically throws light on objectification, sexualization of women, toxic masculinity and patriarchy. The video was nominated for several award categories at MTV VMAs like Video of the Year, Video for Good, and Best Direction at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards.

The nominations for the Best Direction category had Billie Eilish’s ‘Xanny’ – Darkroom / Interscope Records – Directed by Billie Eilish, Doja Cat’s ‘Say So’ – Kemosabe / RCA Records – Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, Dua Lipa’s ‘Don’t Start Now’ – Warner Records – Directed by Nabil, Harry Styles’ ‘Adore You’ – Columbia Records – Directed by Dave Meyers, Taylor Swift for ‘The Man’ – Republic Records and The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ – XO / Republic Records – Directed by Anton Tammi.

No sooner than the award was announced, Swifties rushed to Twitter to praise the singer and congratulate her. Many felt she has ruled in a category mostly dominated by men and found it empowering.  “Taylor won best direction for The Man in a category that is usually dominated by men.”

Another concurred with a meme after Swift won the award.

Some called her 'Queen'. “TAYLOR SWIFT won the VMAs award for 'Best Direction' with 'The Man' music video, congratulations queen. Self-directed yeah!”

Many lauded her directorial prowess. “SO PROUD OF TAYLOR SWIFT FOR WINNING THE BEST DIRECTION FOR THE MAN MV AT VMA!!! IT'S HER FIRST MV DIRECTED BY HERSELF AND IT GIVES HER THE AWARD! WAY TO GO GIRL!! #VMAs”

The biggest winners of all time in this category at the MTV VMA have been filmmaker, photographer Spike Jonze and director-producer David Fincher.
