The much-awaited MTV Video Music Awards on August 30 has sent social media into a frenzy and now with Megan Thee Stallion clinching the Best Hip-Hop award for ‘Savage', the excitement doesn't seem to be fizzling out any soon.

Megan was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards: Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Video for “Savage,” and the recently announced Song of the Summer for “WAP” with Cardi B. Artist of the Year went to Lady Gaga and while Ariana Grande and Gaga's collab 'Rain on Me' clinched the second award. In the best hip-hop category, Megan faced stiff competition from nominations like DaBaby for ‘Bop’ – SCMG / Interscope Records, Eminem ft. Juice WRLD for ‘Godzilla’ – Shady / Aftermath / Interscope Records, Future ft. Drake for ‘Life Is Good’ – Epic Records / Freebandz, Roddy Ricch for ‘The Box’ – Atlantic Records and Travis Scott for ‘Highest in the Room’ – Epic Records / Cactus Jack.

Megan’s canyon of work exudes authenticity, boldness and rapturous execution. Consequence of Sound noted that in ‘Savage’, Megan paints herself as “the hood Mona Lisa” while celebrating her complexity. The site mentions that the song centers on Megan’s relationship with a petulant lover where regardless of the meaning of the song, she wholeheartedly brings herself to each track. Her song got more popularity in pop discourse after a ‘Savage’ dance was created by TikToker Keara Wilson, whose viral clip racked up nearly 3.7 million views since being posted in March 2020 as reported by Variety. As it started to spread, Megan herself took to Instagram to post this video captioned as: Welp let me go learn this lol #savagechallenge.

As soon as Megan was announced as the winner in the category, fans stormed the Internet to shower praises on her while some also felt that others were more deserving. “Megan Thee Stallion just won Best Hip Hop at the VMAS! #VMAs”

A fan wrote in praise, “Megan just single-handedly won best hip hop in a category full of ALL men yeah that’s pretty f**king cool.”

Others went as far as saying: Megan should've won artist of the year and best hip-hop awards as well.

While another couldn't get over the fact that she dominated all the other men nominated for the same category.

A fan mentioned how female artists are thriving in the MTV awards. “Doja’s performance, Ariana’s performance, Megan winning best hip-hop, females are thriving this year and i love it to see it.”

However, some felt that the other nominations were better than the winning entry. “MEGAN THEE STALLIONS SAVAGE WON BEST HIP HOP SONG INSTEAD OF THE BOX OR GODZILLA THIS IS A JOKE LMAO.”

One excited fan wrote about her ending everyone and a disgruntled viewer wrote back saying: 'Travis deserved better'

Another concurred, “How did Megan win best hip hop artist.”

In the past Kanye West has won the most number of nominations in this award category, with a total of 9 while rapper Drake and Nicki Minaj are the biggest winners in this category with three awards each.
