Despite the dire circumstances caused by the novel coronavirus, MTV Video Music Awards 2020 is taking place across various locations in New York City today, August 30, while keeping in mind the required precautionary measures. Like every year, the starry night boasts a series of performances and witnessed a range of awards presented by celebrities including Kelly Clarkson, Jaden Smith, Bella Hadid and Drew Barrymore among others.

Besides using its platform to honor the frontline workers for their service during the pandemic, the award ceremony has also introduced two new categories: 'Quarantine Performance’ and ‘Best Music Video from Home’. While Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande led the other categories with nine nominations each, Maluma, Bad Bunny, Anuel AA and a few other competed against one another for the Best Latin award.

The MTV Video Music Award for Best Latino Artist, which was first introduced in 2010, is to reward artists for their fine work in Spanish music. This year’s nominations included Anuel AA (featuring Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, Karol G and J Balvin for ‘China’, Bad Bunny for ‘Yo Perreo Sola’,  J Balvin for ‘Amarillo’, Black Eyed Peas for 'Mamacita', Karol G (featuring Nicki Minaj) for ‘Tusa’ and Maluma featuring J Balvin for 'Qué Pena'.

After delivering an impressive performance for the viewers, Maluma returned to the stage to accept the Best Latin Award for 'Que Pena'. It didn't take music fans long to surface on Twitter owing to different reasons.

While a few of them congratulated the Columbian singer on his big win, the rest were of the opinion that other artists in the category deserved the award more. A significant number of them seemed shocked to see Maluma win over Bad Bunny and Karol G. One social media user called out the award ceremony for presenting the award to Maluma. The tweet read, "@vmas We know that Maluma didn't win the award for Best Latin and you’re fake sh*t, that’s why the audience for this award just plummeted"

While another added, "@maluma they made a mistake, best latin was for tusa, u got the ugly d**k award"

Meanwhile, another noted, "Y’all b*tches rigged the show, tusa was in the lead for best Latin but suddenly maluma wins??? Bullsh*t"
