The MTV Video Music Awards 2020 were unique in their latest edition featuring performances across iconic locations such as Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island, to honor the spirit and resilience of New York. Kicking off on August 30, the event saw an enthralling performance by Latin American boy band CNCO who debuted with the performance of their song ‘Beso' at a drive-in concert setup in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, along the East River. MTV VMA tweeted about their performance: "Yes, I will be rewatching this on repeat later. "

The power-packed performance had band members Joel Pimental, Richard Camacho, Erick Brian Colón, Christopher Vélez and Zabdiel De Jesús starting their performance amid a bunch of parked cars, before working their way to the stage and unleashing their stunning dance moves. As they moved to the center of the stage, fireworks shot up into the New York night sky with CNCO ending the performance with each dancing on top of a parked vehicle. It was indeed enthralling for their fans who took to Twitter to show their love.

A fan wrote, "CNCO killed it at the VMA's. Love watching them perform. Congratulations to them on an awesome VMA performance debut. STAN CNCO!"

Another mentioned that they could not wait for more for the performance. “ME WAITING FOR CNCO's PERFORMANCE. CNCO ON VMA's.”

A fan in support wrote, “CNCO gonna shut the haters up with their performance I just know it.”

A user tweeted that their performance at night was the best. “You might even hate on them but CNCO’s performance tonight was THE BEST.”

Another concurred, “CNCO’S BEST AWARD SHOW PERFORMANCE.”

Previously, the members of CNCO earlier expressed their elation of performing at MTV awards. “We are super excited to be performing at the VMA’s this year. It means so much that we’re able to share our culture with the world. It makes it even better that this year that after not being able to perform for so long, Toyota is giving us the chance to not only do that, but do it in front of our fans. There’s nothing like it, and we can’t wait,” Variety reported. The Miami based band CNCO were up for nominations in Best Quarantine Performance and Best Choreography and have also bagged the award for the former category, raising eyebrows.

CNCO has been expanding their footprint since the group’s formation in 2015, during the Simon Cowell-created and Ricky Martin-produced Spanish-language singing competition, La Banda as reported by Rolling Stone. The site further notes that the boy band has significantly diverged from the white boy band line ups of the 1990’s and 2000’s and is ready for a global takeover besides other bands in the league like BTS, PrettyMuch and Why Don’t We.Though CNCO has found inspiration from boy bands of the past, their shared Latinidad has been pivotal to establishing themselves as a group of their own; and with all band members coming from completely varied cultures, they bring more broad Latino representation to the mainstream popscene, Rolling Stone underscores.

Besides CNCO, other VMA performers included top notch stars like Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, BTS, Doja Cat and Black Eyed Peas.
