Awards are literally raining down for Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga as the two have just bagged their second VMA of the night for ‘Rain On Me’ with the Best Song of the Year award. The two singers brought double superstar power to the 2020 ceremony on August 30 as they also performed their hit collaboration "Rain on Me" together—for the first time ever. Apart from winning Song of the Year, the duo had earlier bagged the Best Collaboration award as well.

The nominations for Song of the Year category had six songs that were the biggest hits of the year. The nominations were Billie Eilish for ‘Everything I Wanted’ – Darkroom / Interscope Records, Doja Cat for ‘Say So’ – Kemosabe / RCA Records, Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande for ‘Rain On Me’ – Streamline / Interscope Records, Megan Thee Stallion for ‘Savage’ – 300 Entertainment, Post Malone for ‘Circles’ – Republic Records and Roddy Ricch for ‘The Box’ – Atlantic Records.

Capital FM confirmed that Gaga had revealed that the 'rain' in the song portrays both her tears and alcohol consumption habit. It resulted in incredibly agonizing break-ups and the trauma of a sexual assault that she was addressing whilst making the album. Gaga while accepting the award had a message on the meaning of the song ‘Rain on Me’. She said, “I remember when I rewrote the lyrics to the chorus and I sang them for my producer and collaborator, Bloodpop. I remember thinking I had cried so many tears that it felt like an unfathomable downpour from my eyes.”

“But even with that much rain, you don’t have to drown,” she said, as quoted by MTV. “Even though it feels like you are [drowning], you can still swim. And if there’s a strong current with a bunch of waves and they keep crashing over you, if you keep swimming you’ll reach the center of the ocean, where it’s calm, still, and peaceful.”

As soon as the award was announced fans started praising the two stars and their collaborative efforts on the award-winning creation. “Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande won Song of the Year for Rain On Me, earning their second #VMA.”

Another concurred, “Rain on me the best song of the year obviously, congratulations QUEENS.”

Another fan wrote, “Two awards going to Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande for Best Collab & now Song of the Year. #VMAs2020 #GagaVMAs.Side note: If there was an award for mask creativity Gaga should take that one home too.”

Another wrote in praise that the two talents are deserving, "BOTH LITERALLY KILLED IT ARIANAS WHISTLE IS INSANE!!!! IM PROUD THEY WON BEST COLLAB AND SONG OF THE YEAR, THE MOST DESERVING!!!!"

The 2020 VMAs are taking place in various places in New York City with performances designed "to honor the spirit and resilience" of the city hit particularly hard by the pandemic this spring.
