Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation lawsuit
Johnny Depp's defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, may have been the most significant case to go to trial in 2022. Depp claimed Heard damaged his reputation by implying that she had experienced domestic abuse in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed and he countered that he had been the true sufferer in their marriage. Depp then filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard.
Heard countersued, and during her lengthy testimony on the witness stand, she detailed numerous instances in which she claimed Depp had mistreated her both before and after their marriage. After a dramatic six-week trial, Depp won all three of his defamation claims against his ex-wife, and the jury returned a favorable verdict in his favor.
Depp received $10.35 million in compensation, but Heard only prevailed on one of her three defamation claims against her ex-husband and received $2 million in compensatory damages. The legal suspense did not end there, either, as Depp and Heard both filed an appeal challenging the other's victory.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s divorce settlement lawsuit
The couple got engaged in 2014 after dating for two years, becoming one of the most well-known celebrity couples ever. Their first child, North, was born in June 2013 and three more Saint, Chicago, and Psalm followed. However, the pair broke up at the beginning of 2021, and at Kardashian's request, a judge ruled that they were each legally single in March of 2022. The lengthy legal process was delayed in part by West’s reluctance to end the relationship.
West was in the headlines throughout 2022 due to his outspoken behavior. The musician lost out on a number of lucrative business partnerships as a result of his harsh and anti-Semitic comments. Meanwhile in November this year, the divorce between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West has come to a settlement that also officially ends their relationship. According to the terms of the settlement, Kanye West will give Kim Kardashian $200,000 a month in child support. Although the two will share joint custody of their four children, the 45-year-old rapper will be liable for covering half of the kids' costs for college, private protection, and schooling.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Chateau Miraval lawsuit
This year, Brad Pitt sued Angelina Jolie for the former joint ownership of Chateau Miraval, a vineyard in the south of France. The former lovers resolved not to sell their holdings in the vineyard without first contacting each other after purchasing a major stake in it in 2008. However, after a contentious divorce from Pitt in 2016, the ‘Maleficent’ actress sold her shares in Château Miraval to Russian booze tycoon Stoli, angering the ‘Bullet Train’ actor.
Yuri Shefler, a businessman referred to in court filings as "an aggressive third-party competitor," is the owner of Tenute del Mondo, to which Jolie sold her shares. Pitt alleged in his lawsuit that Jolie did not consult him before making this decision. Jolie claimed that Pitt planned to take over the business as retaliation for their divorce and their child-custody dispute in a $250 million cross-complaint filed through her former firm.
After Jolie filed a counter-complaint against Pitt, alleging that the actor physically mistreated her and her children during their 2016 aircraft altercation, the legal drama between the ex-moved couple became more violent.
Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez’s lawsuit
The recent high-profile lawsuit involved Rapper Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion where Lanez, after he was found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion twice in the feet during an altercation on a street in the early hours of July 12, 2020, while under the influence of alcohol. A Los Angeles jury found the "Luv" singer guilty of all three charges.
They concluded that he assaulted Megan with a semi-automatic gun, severely injuring her, after he discharged the weapon carelessly, and he also had a concealed, unregistered gun inside his SUV.
