New 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' Season 2 clip expands the Monsterverse in a bold way
Brace yourself to dive into the action-packed world of Godzilla and Kong as 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' Season 2 gears up to premiere on Friday, February 27. Developed by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the new season introduces a mysterious village where a mythical Titan emerges from the sea. Adding to the hype, the creators recently released a clip teasing a massive expansion of the Monsterverse. The clip reveals the debut of an entirely new monster, one that hasn't appeared in the show or films before but is a familiar, canon character from the comics. This new introduction further suggests that more comic-born creatures could soon enter the Monarch universe. The 35-second clip takes viewers back into the dangers of Skull Island, where the main cast is forced into hiding as they're stalked by leafwings, the pterodactyl-like predators that roam the island's forests. The upcoming title will feature Anna Sawai, Wyatt Russell, Mari Yamamoto, Kiersey Clemons, and others in lead roles.
Tensions escalate in the recently released clip when a leafwing is suddenly ambushed by an even more terrifying creature, which unleashes a bolt of electricity from its mouth before snapping the smaller monster's neck, revealing itself as a psychovulture. While leafwings have previously appeared in the Monsterverse, most notably in 'Kong: Skull Island,' the psychovulture's on-screen debut is a major moment for longtime fans. These creatures have largely been confined to canon comics, including 'Kingdom Kong,' where Kong is attacked by an aggressive flock led by a vicious alpha male. Known as a dominant species on Skull Island and in the Hollow Earth, psychovultures seem far more lethal than their leafwing counterparts.

The creature's electrified attack strongly suggests that Monarch may begin introducing more monsters directly from the comics, opening the door for additional lesser Titans and potentially even major ones to appear in future episodes. However, because the series is set before the global awakening triggered by Ghidorah in 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters,' it's likely the show will focus on smaller-scale threats for now, gradually expanding the Monsterverse's on-screen mythology. Notably, Season 2 shifts away from Titan-versus-Titan conflict, with Kong and Godzilla forced to work together against the looming threat of Titan X. This opens the door to uneasy alliances and deeper political intrigue within Monarch as internal divisions rise alongside the monster-scale danger.
The story brings characters back together on Skull Island and then expands worldwide, following Monarch operatives as they travel across the globe. Along the way, they uncover long-buried family secrets and dig into the mysterious origins. Season 2 is also touted to add emotional depth as Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell return as older and younger versions of Army officer Lee Shaw, making our wait for the premiere harder than expected.
