Melania Trump's top 5 fashion choices during 2020 campaign: From $4.5K Gucci dress to $2.5K military jacket
All eyes might be on President Donald Trump and Joe Biden's presidential race but it is First Lady Melania Trump's outfits that seem to take onlookers' breath away. Wife of the 45th US president, the former Slovenian model has carefully curated her political style with designer brands, sharp silhouettes, and luxe accessories. Saying bye-bye to revealing necklines and sheer fabrics, the mother-of-one has shifted to a modest mix of stylish couture.
“We’ve seen a distinct change in Melania’s style since Trump was inaugurated in early 2017, though the transformation began much earlier,” Gianni Casagrande, digital marketing manager at Moda in Pelle, told Express. “Donald’s bid for political office began way back in 2000. Since then Melania’s style has been moving away from fun-loving party girl to a serious political figure, but still keeping to a few of her signature features. For example, form-fitting materials, bright colors and glamorous accessories.”
“Melania is a fan of bold colors and tailoring, and isn't afraid to stand out and wear something eye-catching,” Casagrande continued. “Her style is certainly more conservative and elegant. She favors designers including Dolce & Gabbana, Roksanda Ilincic, and Ralph Lauren. But she still often goes for an off-the-shoulder look or a thigh split, giving a nod to her previous wardrobe.” Known for her sense of style and experimenting with a variety of fashion labels, her outfits are met with either much praise or criticism from people. Steal a glance at five outfits the 50-year-old donned during the 2020 election campaign.
Gucci girl
What was she wearing?: Chain-print Gucci dress with Hermes Kelly bag
Cost: $4,500 for dress and $17,000 for bag
First Lady Melania Trump looked elegant in a $4,500 chain-print Gucci dress as she cast her ballot in Palm Beach County, Florida. The former supermodel made quite the statement as she voted in-person at the Morton and Barbara Mandel Recreation Center around 10 am local time on Election Day.
She was reportedly wearing an ensemble that included her silk Gucci dress, accessorized with “nude pointed-toe Christian Louboutin heels,” and a “pair of tortoiseshell shades.” Meanwhile, her hair was styled in a low up-do and she completed the elegant look with a canvas-and-leather Hermes Kelly bag, which is likely to be worth around $17,000.
Suit up
What was she wearing?: Black-and-white pinstripe suit from Dolce & Gabbana
Cost: $2,345
The First Lady suited up for her husband President Donald Trump's first presidential debate on September 29. She was seen wearing a sharp black-and-white pinstripe suit from Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2019 ready-to-wear collection. The suit sells at around $2,345 and it features sharp jutting shoulders as well as dramatic peaked lapels. Melania sported the outfit while leaving the White House for Cleveland, Ohio.
She paired the outfit with a white button-down shirt and a pair of navy sunglasses which are very similar to Fendi, Breitbart reports. The former Slovene-American model accented it with a pair of navy Manolo Blahniks and later changed into navy Christian Louboutins when she arrived in Cleveland.
Chic cheetah prints
What was she wearing?: Cheetah-print dress and Louboutin pumps
Cost: $725 for So Kate 5-inch heels
Just days ahead of the 2020 presidential elections on November 3, Melania Trump was seen wearing a black and white ensemble that made her stand out from the crowd for a campaign event in Tampa, Florida. She opted for a statement outfit choice that one could not go wrong with, a cheetah print sleeveless midi dress cinched together with a pleated leather belt. As for footwear, the former model chose to go for a set of black So Kate pumps from Christian Louboutin.
As per Footwear News, the Christian Louboutin So Kate heels retail for $725 at Net-a-Porter.com. The report also read: “The French brand’s So Kate pumps serve as a staple style in Melania’s footwear closet with this specific iteration features a smooth leather finish.”
Fuschia fad
What was she wearing?: Fuchsia fit-and-flare gown by Jason Wu
Cost: $800 for similar dresses by Jason Wu, $675 for Manolo Blahnik pumps
On the third night of the Republican National Convention, Melania decided to opt for a pop of color! For the occasion, she donned a high-neck bright fuchsia fit-and-flare gown, which was sleeveless and featured a drawstring waist with black ties at either side. The silk cocktail dress with a bateau neckline and concealed pockets, designed by Jason Wu, continued into a full pleated midi skirt which cut off just above her ankles. Although the cost of the dress is unknown, Wu has made similar designs priced at around $800, according to Express.
She completed her look with a pair of her favorite Manolo Blahnik classic black pumps — worth $675 — and stuck to her signature make-up look which consisted of smokey eyes with nude lip gloss. While people on social media liked the fact that Melania had finally decided to opt for something vibrant rather than sticking to her go-to neutral colors, many of them found the ties hanging off the sides of her dress to be weird.
Military-esque marvel
What was she wearing?: Military-inspired outfit with Alexander McQueen jacket
Cost: $2,450
For her speech at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, August 25 at the White House, Melania, 50, was seen sporting a military-inspired outfit that featured a deep green colored blazer as well as a matching skirt. The jacket had been designed by Alexander McQueen and got several people on social media talking. As per a fan page on Twitter, Melania had matched her skirt and jacket to a pair of Christian Louboutins. She chose to leave her hair loose to fall over her shoulders.
CNN's Kate Bennett shared that it seemed that the McQueen jacket had also been worn by the likes of models such as Kaia Gerber. Hunter Schwartz from Yellow Line revealed that the jacket sells for around $2,450 though it is currently on sale at Far Fetched for 40% off.
Casagrande perfectly defines the first lady by saying, “Melania's style choices demonstrate that she isn't someone happy to fade into the background and that she is confident in her position. She is not afraid to strike a balance between elegant and sexy, always pairing any outfit with smoldering eye make-up and glamorous waves.”
