Meghan Markle‘s March 7 bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey was allegedly not the first time she spoke out against a tabloid that claimed the Duchess of Sussex made Kate Middleton cry.

Meghan reportedly called out Kensington Palace’s failure to denounce the gossip story in an email sent to a royal aid in January 2020, an incident which Harper’s Bazaar’s royal editor Omid Scobie reported more than a year later on March 11. Scobie, the Duchess of Sussex's biographer, cited an unnamed source and has published the email in which she demands aides release a statement claiming "Kate drove her to tears" at a bridesmaid dress fitting.

The email exchange reportedly happened after Kensington Palace asked the 'Suits' star and her husband, Prince Harry, to “cosign a statement against an ‘offensive’ newspaper report stating Prince William ‘constantly bullied’ the Sussexes before their decision to step away," a favor which hadn't been extended to her, according to Scobie.

The source revealed Meghan had emailed a royal aide: "Well, if we're just throwing any statement out there now, then perhaps KP can finally set the record straight about me [not making Kate cry]." However, this request was “ignored,” according to the report. “But, as with many requests made by the couple, her suggestion was ignored. The Duchess of Cambridge, she was told, should never be dragged into idle gossip,” said the report, which was written for the website of the US magazine.

The email was clearly private, sent by Meghan to only two or three of her most senior staff at most, reported the Daily Mail.

Meghan's interview with Oprah Winfrey revealed many things, including an incident about Meghan making sister-in-law Kate Middleton cry over a dress for Princess Charlotte, when rumors of a rift between the duchesses swirled amongst the media. But Meghan revealed that it was, in fact, the other way round. “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining—yes, the issue was correct about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry and it really hurt my feelings, and I thought in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding that it didn’t make sense to not be just doing what everyone else was doing, which was try to be supportive, knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot,” Meghan said.

Princess Charlotte, then three, had been trying on her outfit just weeks before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry, during which time the 37-year-old bride-to-be was understood to have insisted on "the very best" for her big day — but the fitting did not go according to her demands.
