Matt Lauer and Shamin Abas are 'serious about each other' as couple enjoys 'low-key life together'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Matt Lauer and his girlfriend Shamin Abas gave a glimpse of their relationship as they stepped out together for a date night in New York City over the weekend. The former 'Today' anchor who tends to keep his life private appeared back in the limelight strictly for the rare outing. Lauer dressed casually in a black jacket and grey hoodie while his partner wore a midi skirt with a patterned top.
It appears that the couple is going really strong as they enjoy living a low-key life together. A source has told People that "Matt and Shamin are happy and serious about each other." The insider further added: "They had a good solid foundation as friends and in business when they started dating, and the romance has grown over the years. They are happy and both busy in their own lives, as well as together," the source adds. "They have many of the same interests." The source added: "They try and stay out of the spotlight but are happy together and not interested in a high-profile life. They are off the radar and low-key. They are enjoying their lives."

Matt Lauer kept a low profile since getting fired
The couple's outing came following a source dishing to People in November that the television personality has adhered to tighten his inner circle five years after being removed from the Today show. The source shared that Lauer had "kind of withdrawn from several friendships in the last year," after the release of his former co-host Katie Couric's memoir 'Going There'.
"He was really upset by Katie Couric's book," the source revealed. "His level of trust has just diminished with a lot of people he considered friends and much of that was because of Katie's book, and because talking to people from his past is painful."
Alleged rape accusations against Lauer
Lauer was reportedly fired by NBC in November 2017 over allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace. A former network employee identified as Brooke Nevils reported that he sexually harassed her. This is not all as several other women also came forward with similar accusations following the report. Nevils spoke about it publicly to Ronan Farrow for his 2019 book ‘Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators’. Nevils told Farrow that Lauer allegedly raped her in his hotel room at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where she was working for NBC's Meredith Vieira. Lauer, on the other hand, has insisted all of his encounters were consensual.
No effect of Lauer's past on Shamin Abas' business
However, this has not affected his relationship with Lauer as a source told People in 2021 that Abas was "very happy" with the 65-year-old anchor. The couple met through work about 20 years ago and have continued to remain friends. Lauer parted ways with his ex-wife Annette Roque in 2019, and soon after he and Abas began dating.
The pair resides in New York and spend time with each other between Abas’ work travels, according to the source, who added: "She is a dedicated businesswoman who loves to work. She is independent and has made a nice life for herself." The source told the outlet that Abas supports Lauer "in every way,” confirming that his past does not affect her business.
