Squirrel Girl, one of Marvel's greatest, may never get MCU debut with 'New Warriors' in development hell
Not too many people might know one of Marvel's most successful comic book hero. Not Captain America or Iron Man but the teenage superhero Doreen Green/Squirrel Girl. Created by Will Murray and legendary Marvel Comics artist Steve Ditko in 1991, Squirrel Girl has gone on to defeat many a villain who would normally be considered an Avengers-level threat, including the likes of Doctor Doom and Thanos.
Doreen has the proportional strength and abilities of a garden-variety squirrel and the power to communicate with the little rodents. Just looking at her powerset, you wouldn't think this young woman could pose such a large threat but as ridiculous as she may appear to be, Squirrel Girl has proven time and again she is a force to be reckoned with.
Over the years, she's built up quite a reputation for heroics. Though she is admittedly a mostly comical character, Earth's heroes have learned to appreciate her abilities to the point where Jessica Jones and Luke Cage hired her to be the nanny of their infant daughter Danielle Cage.
Squirrel Girl was supposed to make her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of a planned 'New Warriors' series that has unfortunately been stuck in development hell for quite some time. Freeform had initially been interested in taking up 'New Warriors' as a superhero sitcom about a group of wannabe heroes inspired by the Avengers, with Milana Vayntrub ('This Is Us') playing the role of Squirrel Girl.
Although an unaired pilot for the show was filmed, Freeform, unfortunately, decided to step away from the project and it hasn't been picked up by another network since then. Hopes of seeing Doreen in action in the MCU were dashed after GWW reported the series is officially dead even though Marvel executives were supposedly quite interested in bringing it to screens.
Marvel Television hasn't released a statement on the show's status yet so there's still some hope that it might eventually find a home and Squirrel Girl is such a fun character it would be a shame not to have her in the MCU in some capacity. Though the series may be dead, Doreen can hopefully still get a shot at a live-action debut as part of one of Marvel's Disney+ shows but as of right now it looks like the character won't be coming to screens any time soon.
