Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene became cannon fodder on Twitter as she apologized for comments she made about the Holocaust after she secretly visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, on Monday, June 14.

Greene's apology comes after a recent incident where she made controversial statements about the mass Jewish genocide in Germany. In May last, the avid Donald Trump supporter — who has long drawn ire for her controversial and racist statements from Democrats and Republicans alike — compared mask mandates with having to wear the Star of David in Nazi Germany.

“The horrors of the Holocaust are something that some people don’t even believe happened, and some people deny, but there is no comparison to the Holocaust,” Greene told reporters after her visit. “There are words that I have said and remarks that I have made that I know are offensive and for that I want to apologize.”

The Holocaust was the systematic state-sponsored slaughter of six million Jewish men, women and children, which was around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population, as well as millions of others by Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler and their collaborators during World War II.

What did Marjorie Taylor Greene say about the Holocaust?

Greene was first mired in the scandal for statements she made on a conservative podcast. She was a guest on David Brody's 'The Water Cooler', a Christian Broadcasting Network program, on May 21, when she said on-air that being compelled to wear a mask or to be vaccinated is "exactly the type of abuse" that Jews suffered in Nazi Germany. That generated a lot of ire, but she wouldn't apologize.

Later, when she had two more chances to apologize, she didn't. On May 23, Greene told a reporter, "I said nothing wrong. I think any rational Jewish person didn't like what happened in Nazi Germany. And any rational Jewish person doesn't like what's happening with overbearing mask mandates and overbearing vaccine policies." On May 25, she followed up her statements with a tweet, saying, "Vaccinated employees get a vaccination logo just like the Nazi’s forced Jewish people to wear a gold star. Vaccine passports & mask mandates create discrimination against unvaxxed people who trust their immune systems to a virus that is 99% survivable."

'NEVER compare an atrocity like the holocaust to mask mandates'

Twitter made light of the situation but had no mercy for Greene. "Me: (visits the holocaust museum once in my late 40s) turns out the holocaust was a lot more than just wearing masks at costco....my bad!" said one. "Making MTG go to the Holocaust museum is pretty funny. I went there with my brother when we were kids and we were like “well this sucks we already knew this stuff” and then we heard this woman say “oh my god…they couldn’t wear makeup” and then realized that’s who it’s for," said a second.

"I've never visited the Holocaust Museum, but I still have enough common sense to know that you NEVER compare an atrocity like the holocaust to mask mandates. You know, because history books," a third chipped in.

'Imagine what else she doesn't know'

Others took it more seriously. "She literally said “I made a mistake. I visited the Holocaust museum.” It’s so obvious that she was told to go, then she came out and said that. It’s a damn dog whistle. She’s 47 years old. She knew about the Holocaust before she went," said a Twitter user. "The fact that Marjorie Taylor Greene, at 47, had to visit the Holocaust Museum in DC (as a publicity stunt) to announce that the Holocaust was bad, is why our schools should teach Critical Race Theory: imagine what else Marjorie doesn't know," said another.

"Did they make Marjorie Taylor Greene wear a mask while touring the Holocaust Museum and did she keep muttering 'I can so relate'?" a third quipped. "Pro tip: Don’t give tours of the Holocaust Museum to people liable to treat it as a how-to guide," a fourth said. One said, "I can’t listen to her. So she thought it was a hoax?"
