'Malcolm in the Middle' returns after 20 years — and we’re ready to relive the madness with Frankie Muniz
Nearly two decades after ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ signed off, the beloved sitcom is officially making its return. And this time, it’s bringing chaos to Hulu. The streamer has dropped the first teaser trailer for ‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,’ confirming that the revival will arrive as a four-episode event series premiering April 10, 2026. The limited revival reunites much of the original cast while updating the story for a new era. It brings nostalgia with fresh perspectives that reflect how life and family dysfunction have evolved since fans last checked in on the Wilkerson household.
The newly released teaser opens with Malcolm, once again played by Frankie Muniz, living what he insists is a perfectly stable adult life, far removed from the chaos that defined his childhood. “My life is fantastic now,” Muniz declares as the trailer begins, positioning Malcolm as someone who has deliberately kept his distance from his family for years. That carefully curated calm doesn’t last long. Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) demand Malcolm’s presence at a major family milestone: their 40th wedding anniversary. As the teaser unfolds, it becomes clear that Malcolm’s absence has not gone unnoticed.
“Malcolm has been intentionally hiding himself from this family for years,” Lois snaps in classic fashion. Adding weight to the story is a new character: Leah, Malcolm’s daughter, played by Keeley Karsten. As she points out to her overwhelmed father, he can’t keep pretending his family, or his past, doesn’t exist. Before long, Malcolm finds himself exactly where fans remember him best: right back in the middle of the madness. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney ordered the revival last year, locking in Muniz, Cranston, and Kaczmarek to reprise their iconic roles. Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield are also returning as Malcolm’s brothers, Francis and Reese.
Meanwhile, series creator Linwood Boomer is back as writer and executive producer. Several new characters will expand the family. Vaughan Murrae joins the cast as Kelly, Malcolm’s youngest sibling, while Kiana Madeira plays Tristan, Malcolm’s girlfriend. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps into the role of Dewey, following a recast. Erik Per Sullivan, who portrayed Dewey in the original series, is not returning for the revival. Originally airing from 2000 to 2006, ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ followed the life of a gifted boy managing adolescence within a loud, unpredictable, working-class family.
The series stood apart from traditional sitcoms thanks to its single-camera format, lack of a laugh track, and Malcolm’s frequent habit of breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly. Those creative choices helped redefine TV comedy in the early 2000s. The show earned widespread praise for its sharp writing, rapid-fire humor, and surprisingly heartfelt storytelling. Characters like Hal and Lois became instantly recognizable for their over-the-top parenting, while Malcolm’s intelligence and self-awareness gave the series its emotional core.
