The 'Holiday' hitmaker also wore a matching pair of leather boots, knee-high socks, and a black Bandolier crossbody phone case. The mother-of-six made her brunette locks into two braids as the photographs showed off her slim stomach.
Critics slam Madonna for her 'unrecognizable' appearance
The trolls had slammed Madonna for her "unrecognizable' appearance at the 2023 Grammy Awards. One user commented, "What have you done to yourself 😢 you used to be such an icon and beautiful woman and you are destroying yourself!" Another commented, "I can’t even tell that it’s you."
One user added, "Need another surgeon and counseling because this is not the best version when it's done too much." Another social media user said, "Sorry, this is just GROSS!!!"
"You look so different 😭 where’s Madonna????" another chimed in. In response, Madonna stated, her face was misrepresented and appeared rounder and puffier than it actually was due to a "closeup" taken with a "long lens camera."
Madonna hits back at critics
The singer responded to criticism about her 'unrecognizable' appearance at the Grammy Awards in a long Instagram post she shared on Wednesday, February 8. "Once again I am caught in the light of ageism and misogyny That pervades the world we live in," she wrote in the caption.
In the post she shared on Instagram, Madonna began the caption by describing it as an "honor" to present the Grammy Award to Sam Smith, who shared the duet prize and made history by being the first openly non-binary artist to win in the Best Pop Duo/Group Collaboration category with Kim Petras, who became the first openly trans person to win a Grammy. She explained that she decided to introduce Petras rather than accept the prestigious Album of the Year Award because she felt that the former would be more significant and appropriate given her role as a trailblazer.
However, Madonna was irritated by the way in which people discounted her words in favor of her outer appearance. "Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim- Many people chose to only talk about Close-up photos of me Taken with a long lens camera By a press photographer that Would distort anyone’s face!!" the singer said.
"Once again I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny That permeates the world we live in," she added. Madonna complained that she lived in a "world that refuses to celebrate women pass the age of 45 And feels the need to punish her If she continues to be strong willed, hard-working and adventurous [sic]."
She continued that she wasn't about to start apologizing for "any of the creative choices I have made nor the way that I look or dress and I’m not going to start."
The 'Like A Prayer' singer said that while she felt she has been "degraded" since her earliest days of fame, she understands that "this is all a test and I am happy to do the trailblazing so that all the women behind me can have an easier time in the years to come."
