Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet may have split but a source told PEOPLE that this separation decision was not taken overnight. Rather, it was a result of the duo growing 'apart' over time due to different priorities.
The pair announced their separation officially last week via a post on Instagram, which has now been taken down. After almost 17 years together, five of which Bonet and Momoa were married, the couple decided to part ways. The unnamed source told the publication that the former couple "were amazing for years, until they no longer were."

The source also added, "They have grown apart because of different focuses." This unnamed insider continued to say that their respective careers were taking them on different paths and different directions, which resulted in Momoa and Bonet having different focuses in life. Talking about the Aquaman star, the source said, "A few years ago, Jason was struggling to find work. Now his career is booming. And he wants to keep working as much as he can." Naturally, with multiple projects, the frequency and duration of travel increases too.
Pointing this out and indicating towards Bonet, 54, the source said, "Lisa has had no interest in joining [Jason] on every location." The source further said, "She enjoys her life in LA". Explaining why the couple took this step, the source said that "it's been difficult for them to be apart" and that this distance was taking a toll on their relationship. They added, "For some people, it might strengthen their marriage. For Lisa and Jason's marriage, being apart has been a disaster."
The former couple share two children, Lola, 14, and Nakoa-Wolf, 13. The source pointed out that the parents are behaving very maturely and will 'keep peace' for the sake of their children. They added, "It's not going to be some scandalous divorce where they trash talk each other. They are both very spiritual and believe in a higher power."
Since Bonet does not have social media, Momoa revealed their separation in a post on Wednesday which has now been deleted. He captioned it by saying, "We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times … A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception … feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring. And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage. We share this not because we think it's newsworthy but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become … "
