Lena Waithe to be honored with Trailblazer Award at upcoming 'MTV Movie & TV Awards'
Lena Waithe is one of those women you remember as harbingers of change. The first queer black woman to win an Emmy, she also started conversation around queer black women in the industry when she graced the cover of Vanity Fair in April. She will now be honored with the Trailblazers Awards at 'MTV Movie & TV Awards'.
The ceremony will air on Monday, June 18 next month and will be hosted by Tiffany Haddish. This award aims to celebrate and recognize artists who bring their zing to the entertainment industry of today. They create stories that are unique.
In 2014, Waithe had produced a film called 'Dear White People', which has now been adapted into a highly successful Netflix series by the same name.
She won the history-making Emmy for best writing in a comedy series award for her epic content in Netflix's 'Master of None'. She also stars in the series alongside actor Aziz Ansari as a witty, in your face lesbian Denise.
It is no argument that she is one of the most well-written and perfectly portrayed lesbian characters in television today.
She starred in Steven Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' recently and is the creator, writer, and producer of Showtime's 'The Chi'. She's also writing and producing a show for TBS called 'Twenties'.
She's also a mentor on The Black List. Talk about a woman with many feathers in her cap.
"Lena is shaking up Hollywood and breaking cultural boundaries through her innovative and authentic storytelling. Her unwavering passion for equality and inclusion make her the perfect recipient for this year's Trailblazer Award," said Amy Doyle, general manager of MTV, VH1, and Logo, in a statement.
The award show is set to air at 9 pm from the Barker Hanger in Los Angeles. Tiffany Haddish has been selected as the host for this year. This will be Lena's first-time attendance at the award ceremony.
