Kodak Black apologizes to Nipsey Hussle for remarks on Lauren London, fans ask ‘dead man before Black woman?’
Rapper Kodak Black seems to have grown up now that he has had more time to reflect on his previous failings. The rapper is still serving time for a nearly four-year sentence in federal prison after pleading guilty to weapons charges. He was arrested at the Rolling Loud Music Festival in May 2019.
Having lived a hard-knock life in an impoverished single-parent household since he was 15, the rapper has also faced a slew of other charges in the past, including drug possession, kidnapping and sexual assault. Some of these cases are still pending against him. However, the 23-year-old rapper, who legally changed his name from Dieuson Octave to Bill Kapri, has now posted what seems to be a heartfelt apology to rapper Nipsey Hussle. He offered a mea culpa for comments he made about Hussle's widow, Lauren London, after the West Coast rapper, activist and entrepreneur was shot dead outside his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019.
Soon after news of Nipsey's tragic killing made headlines around the world, Black had made comments about London that were decidedly in poor taste. In an Instagram Live video, Kodak said, "Lauren London that's baby, though. She 'bout to be out here single. She fittin' to be a whole widow out here. I'll be the best man I can be for her. I'll give her a whole year. She might need a whole year to be crying and s**t for (Nipsey)." After one of the rapper's friends called him out for his inappropriate comments, Black said, "I ain't trying to shoot at her," and added, "I'm saying, listen. She can do two, three years. I'll try to be like the friend if you need to holla or a shoulder to lean on. She can call my line."
Needless to say, the rap world took a dim view of those controversial comments and radio stations refused to play any of the rapper's songs after his comments became a matter of public record. Rapper TI also got engaged in a heated beef with Black for going too far, leading to diss tracks being released by both rappers in the past.
However, it now seems that Black has realized the error of his ways as he recently posted a lengthy apology regarding his comments from last year. The rapper posted a picture of Nipsey on his Instagram on July 6 along with poetic lyrics that seemed to acknowledge that he had been wrong.
The hip-hop star began by saying, "Willin To Accept When I’m Wrong & Stand Firm When I’m Right. The Whole World Know Your Example Was A Guiding Light. I Pray Your Fam Light & Accept This Humble Apology In My Kite." He then paid tribute to Nipsey himself: "You Remind Me Of Icecube, Bunchy Carter & Huey P. A Hustler & Owner The Second Coming Of Easy E. What Happened To You Could’ve Happened To Me! Im a Young Philanthropist Like You."
He then directly referenced his ill-timed comments from the past and wrote, "Even Tho We From Two Different Worlds, I Saw Your Vision But I Notice That My Words Are Often Misinterpreted. Sometimes A Man Say Things He Doesn’t Really Mean But On Some Z S*** I Never Meant To Disrespect Your Queen, Homie I Was Really Respecting Your Scene. #FLYHIGH Ima Keep The Marathon Going #KINGKAHAN @nipseyhussle @laurenlondon."
Some fans seemed to accept that he was apologizing for his past immaturity and praised him for what they call positive growth. One fan said, "You been f***ing real YAK! Free you bro, I miss hearing yo s*** glide." A fan also posted, "And that’s one growth!" while another said, "I respect Kodak owning up to his wrong and apologizing to Nipsey!! A real man admits when he messed up!"
However other hip-hop fans still didn't like the fact that Black would rather apologize to Nipsey than to London herself. One fan tweeted a scathing post that read, "Why did Kodak Black pen this wack a** apology to Nipsey Hussle instead of Lauren London??? You’d apologize to a dead man before apologizing to a Black woman??? Make it make sense." Another supporter posted, "Respect but still man to man, u never disrespect another person queen." Another Twitter user angrily said, "I don't care if you feel some type of way. He’s a rapist and a huge colorist who’s made it VERY clear he don’t give a flying f*** about Black women so f*** him."
The majority of fans seemed to take his apology in the right spirit, however, saying, "Whether they accept it or not, you said yo peace got it off yo heart then move forward, respect." Another follower concluded, "Na man we definitely showing this guy love again when he comes out."
