Rapper Kodak Black drops new track 'Harriet Tubman' from behind prison bars as Christmas surprise for fans
Incarcerated rapper Kodak Black has just dropped a sizzling Christmas surprise for fans who had marked a brand-new release from the 22-year-old star on their wishlist.
Barely a month after being sentenced to nearly three years in prison over federal weapons charges, Bill K Kapri aka Kodak Black just dropped a blazing-hot single titled 'Harriet Tubman' for his fans while still behind prison bars.
In naming the track after the famous African-American abolitionist and one-time runaway slave, Harriet Tubman, it seems that the Florida artiste is making a conscious effort to identify with the courageous political activist, who was revered as a revolutionary figure for freedom and tenacity during the American Civil War.
Looking at the lyrics, it's also presumably an effort to move past and transcend his own chequered legal history, given Tubman's personal well-documented struggles with the law.
Some choice snippets from the lyrics are especially telling, where Kodak Black confesses that his tough upbringing and consequent run-ins with federal authorities have made him feel like he's been running from the law all his life, which has got him "feeling like Harriet Tubman".
He also reflects on his harsh present circumstances in the track: "Like a runaway slave / Better run now you get hung" and "So motherf**king tired / Been runnin’ all my life / Harriet Tubman, I’ve been runnin’ all my life." He also namechecks the famous outlaw and train robber Jesse James in the next verse — "Runnin’ like I’m Jesse James / Like I’m tryna get away." Have a listen to the explosive track below:
Kodak Black had even posted on his Instagram account about how abusive his life in jail was getting: “On October 29th I was laced with an unknown substance here in Miami, FDC. That substance gave me an out of body experience and had me feeling like I was possessed and dying slowly.”
But despite these struggles, that hasn't dampened the 'If I'm Lyin, I'm Flyin' singer's generous holiday spirit.
The Florida native made headlines a couple of days ago when he donated over 8,000 dollars to various charitable causes in Florida. The rapper said he saw the Christmas gifts as a worthwhile investment during his time in custody.
