'Klaus': Release date, plot, cast, trailer, and everything you need to know about Netflix's animated holiday comedy

This Christmas, Netflix is telling you the story of how Santa Claus became the children's favorite. 'Klaus' the animated holiday comedy feature directed by 'Despicable Me' co-creator Sergio Pablos, is a charming 2D animation that tells the story of Santa's origins and is set to become Netflix's first entry in the Best Animated Feature Oscar race. 

Here is everything you need to know about 'Klaus' coming to Netflix. 

Release date

'Klaus' is scheduled to release in select theatres on November 8, 2019, and on Netflix on November 15, 2019. 

Plot

According to the official synopsis of the film: "When Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) distinguishes himself as the postal academy’s worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva (Rashida Jones) and discovers Klaus (Oscar winner J.K. Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care."

Schwartzman is perhaps best known for his collaborations with aesthetic king Wes Anderson namely 'The Darjeeling Limited', 'Fantastic Mr Fox', 'Moonrise Kingdom', 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and 'Isle of Dogs'. Apart from projects with Anderson, Schwartzman is also known for 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' and 'Saving Mr Banks'.

Academy Award-winning actor Simmons needs no introduction. The actor is best known for his role of Dr Emil Skoda on 'Law & Order', and J. Jonah Jameson in the 'Spider-Man' trilogy and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the film 'Spider-Man: Far From Home'. For his performance on 'Whiplash', Simmons received critical acclaim along with 38 accolades including the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, Critics' Choice Award and BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. He is also known to play Kai in 'Kung Fu Panda 3' and Mayor Lionheart in 'Zootopia'. 

Rashida Jones as Alva

Jones is perhaps best known for playing Ann Perkins in 'Parks and Recreation', a role for which she received a nomination for NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. On the movie front, Jones is known for 'I Love You, Man', 'The Social Network', 'The Muppets', and 'Celeste and Jesse Forever.

Academy Award-winning actress Cusack is known for her roles in 'Runaway Bride', 'High Fidelity', 'Where the Heart Is', and 'School of Rock'. She is also known for lending her voice to Jessie, for which she was nominated for the Teen Choice Award for Film – Choice Hissy Fit and won the Annie Award for Voice Acting in a Feature Production. Cusack's role of Sheila Jackson on 'Shameless' bagged her five consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning it for the first time in 2015. 

Director

Written and directed by Sergio Pablos

'Klaus' is the Spanish animator and screenwriter's directorial debut. Pablos is best known as the creator of the 'Despicable Me' franchise. For his work on 'Treasure Planet' and 'Rio', Pablos was nominated for the Annie Awards in 2003 and 2012 respectively.

A very adorable trailer to 'Klaus' shows us Jason Schwartzman's Jesper meeting Klaus with a proposal that Klaus could give away his old handmade toys to children and Jesper would courier them. The beautifully created world by Sergio Pablos is ready to get you in high spirits and bring in the holiday cheer early on.
