After the rousing success of 'The Irishman', Martin Scorsese is gearing up to deliver his next big film, this time starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. Based on the non-fiction book of the same name by American journalist David Grann, 'Killers of the Flower Moon' will be a period western set in Oklahoma in the 1920s.

Here’s everything you need to know about the project:

Release Date

'Killers of the Flower Moon' doesn't have an official release date yet. It was initially expected to arrive in 2021 but with the coronavirus pandemic halting production on projects around the world, it remains to be seen when the movie will be slated.

Plot

David Grann's book details how in the early 1920s, oil deposits were discovered beneath the lands of the Osage people, which led to a series of murders that eventually ended up being one of the earliest cases taken on by the newly formed Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

These incidents eventually led to the trial and conviction of a man named William Hale who was believed to be the mastermind behind the criminal plot. "We think it's a Western," Scorsese said, describing the movie in an interview with the French publication Premiere.

"It happened in 1921-1922 in Oklahoma. There are certainly cowboys, but they have cars and also horses. The film is mainly about the Osage, an Indian tribe that was given horrible territory, which they loved because they said to themselves that Whites would never be interested in it.”

"We discovered oil there and, for about 10 years, the Osage became the richest people in the world, per capita. Then, as with the Yukon and the Colorado mining regions, the vultures disembark, the white man, the European arrives, and all was lost."

"There, the underworld had such control over everything that you were more likely to go to jail for killing a dog than for killing an Indian. The history of civilization goes back to Mesopotamia. The Hittites are invaded by other people, they disappear, and later it is said that they have been assimilated or, rather, absorbed."

"It is fascinating to see this mentality which is reproduced in other cultures, through two World Wars. And which is therefore timeless, I think. This is the film that we are going to try to make," he added.

Cast

Leonardo DiCaprio

The iconic Oscar-winning actor is set to star in the upcoming film in an undisclosed role. According to Scorsese, Robert De Niro is also expected to join the cast in the role of William Hale with the rest of the roles being filled out by Native American actors.

Director

Martin Scorsese

The legendary filmmaker was born in New York City in 1942 and has built for himself a career spanning seven decades. His best-known movies include 'Gangs of New York', 'The Wolf of Wall Street', 'Taxi Driver' and 'The Departed'.

News

Scorsese is reportedly in talks with Apple and Netflix to produce and/or distribute the film, which is expected to cost upwards of $200 million to produce. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Scorsese has been asked by Paramount, the studio currently funding the project, to seek out other partners who can help cover the burgeoning cost of production.

The movie doesn't have a trailer out yet but we will be updating this section as soon as it becomes available. Stay tuned for more!
