'We’ve got your back': Internet rejoices as Katie Hobbs flips Arizona for Dems after close battle with Kari Lake

PHOENIX, ARIZONA: Democratic nominee Katie Hobbs has won the race for governor of Arizona, defeating Republican nominee Kari Lake. Hobbs is Arizona’s secretary of state. With 97% of the projected vote in, Hobbs received 50.4% of the vote compared to 49.6% for Lake, who is a former television news anchor. 

Hobbs is known for running a low-key campaign against Lake and refusing to debate her. She said she did not wish to give the GOP nominee the chance to spread conspiracy theories and accused Lake of being “only interested in creating a spectacle". Lake called Hobbs a “coward” for refusing to debate.

Following her victory, Hobbs tweeted, "Democracy is worth the wait. Thank you, Arizona. I am so honored and so proud to be your next Governor."

In a statement, Hobbs said, according to CNBC, "I want to thank the voters for entrusting me with this immense responsibility. It is truly an honor of a lifetime, and I will do everything in my power to make you proud." She added, "For the Arizonans who did not vote for me, I will work just as hard for you -because even in this moment of division, I believe there is so much more that connects us."

Arizona has been an important battleground in recent years. In the past, former president Donald Trump, who backed Lake’s candidacy, lost the state and the national vote to President Joe Biden. Hobbs defended Arizona’s election system against Trump and his allies' efforts to overturn the results.

Social media celebrated Hobbs' victory, with one writing on Twitter, "Governor Hobbs sounds amazing!! Congratulations Hopefully Kari lake fades away." Another user wrote, "We can breathe again. We’ve got your back. Congratulations. This is a victory for all of Arizona."

"I remember when you first announced the campaign after the MAGA hat army tried to threaten you into submission in 2020.. you never stopped and just pulled off this amazing win. Congratulations!!" one user said.

"My vote was real and i count! Nothing fraudulent about it! So happy we did it! Congratulations governor Hobbs," one user said, while another wrote, "I live far away in WA but this news has made my week. Congratulations Governor-Elect Hobbs!" "Congratulations to you! Sometimes the good guys (and gals) win!" another user tweeted.
