Depp was greeted by enthusiastic fans

'Jeanne du Barry,' Depp's first major feature role in three years following a prolonged legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard that halted his Hollywood career, marked the inauguration of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. According to Mid Day, he was welcomed by ecstatic fans and had to pause to sign autographs before stepping onto the red carpet. Despite facing some online backlash for "celebrating abusers for 76 years," the majority of fans erupted in joy. The Cannes Film Festival's chief, Thierry Fremaux, addressed critics by expressing his admiration for Johnny Depp as an actor and explaining the decision to open the festival with his movie.

'We love to see survivors surviving!! King Jack Sparrow!!'

As videos of the theater moment went viral, the crowd erupted in celebration, applauding the star for his comeback. However, there were also some dissatisfied fans. Ramin Setoodeh tweeted, "Johnny Depp is met with a rapturous standing ovation as he enters the Palais for the premiere of 'Jeanne du Barry,'" along with a video. One fan expressed, "We love to see survivors surviving!! King Jack Sparrow!!" Another wrote, "Shine, Johnny! You deserve every moment of recognition and appreciation." A fan remarked, "I'm glad public sentiment has turned back in Johnny's favor." Noting his struggles, another fan said, "Those cheekbones are everything - he deserves a standing ovation. He's been through hell and back, and now he can finally laugh and smile again."

'He must be feeling very emotional'

Criticizing the organizers, a user commented, "The same festival that gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation; they love sex offenders." Another user simply stated, "Grotesque." A keen fan noticed, "Did anyone else notice Johnny's eyes welling up with tears just before he sat down?
