Did Johnny Depp want Amber Heard to quit acting? Actress's 'Aquaman' role used to blow theory apart
In court on Monday, April 25, the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial has captured a lot of attention as Depp used Amber Heard's casting in 'Aquaman,' in which she starred as 'Mera', to refute claims that the actor was so controlling in his marriage to Heard that he refused to allow her to attend meetings. There was a disagreement over text exchanges that Heard's attorneys think showed Depp being overly possessive of his then-wife. Heard's attorney presented a text message from Heard to Depp that said, "I'm at a coffee meeting now, will be home soon." Depp's statement was then read out by the lawyer "No goddamn meetings. No movies. Why? Why do you deviate from our agreement? What species of meeting? F*** it. Just tell me when you get home."
"You didn't want her to take the meeting that she was taking that day, correct?" Heard's lawyer then questioned Depp. It appears that Heard's attorneys intend to portray Depp as controlling over his wife and her film career. Depp, on the other hand, responded to the claim by saying he didn't mind that she was having a meeting. However, he just didn't like that she was having a meeting when they had already made other arrangements for that day.

According to Unilad, Depp added, in an attempt to convey that he had no objections to Heard attending film meetings, "It's not about her doing films. How do you think she got Aquaman, sir?" "[T]his is not necessarily an angry text, it's just why do you deviate from our agreement?" he explained. Meanwhile, Heard had a reasonably successful run in Hollywood in terms of chances throughout the period that Depp and Heard were together. The initial rumors of Heard being cast as Mera in Justice League and Aquaman began circulating in January 2016 and were later confirmed in May 2016. Since the success of Aquaman, she's seen her full role as Mera finally revealed as part of Zack Snyder's Justice League release on HBO Max, leading to 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' releasing next year.

Since April 19, Depp has been on the witness stand every day of the trial, testifying in a $50 million defamation trial brought by Depp against his ex-wife, Heard, after an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018 accusing that the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star abused her during their brief marriage between 2015 and 2017. Heard subsequently counter-sued Depp for $100 million in defamation. Initially, Depp was questioned in court by his own attorneys, but Heard's lawyers have since started cross-examining the actor. Meanwhile, Heard has yet to testify in the defamation case. The legal fight between Depp and Heard follows a 2020 trial between Depp and the British publication The Sun. The actor was unable to prove libel against the newspaper when it used Heard's allegations about Depp in a headline referring to him as a ‘wife-beater.’
