New York City, New York (Release): Japan Society has unveiled its March/April lineup, featuring a rare treat for cinephiles: a 35mm screening of Shusuke Kaneko's 1988 queer classic, 'Summer Vacation 1999'. As part of the Kinema Essentials program on March 22, the film will grace American screens for the first time in over a decade. Adapted from the iconic shojo manga 'The Heart of Thomas' by Moto Hagio, the film offers a unique exploration of adolescent love, casting young actresses in the roles of schoolboys.

'Summer Vacation 1999' stands as a pioneering work in queer cinema. The film offers a unique portrayal of adolescent love and identity exploration. Kaneko's bold decision to cast young actresses as schoolboys adds layers of androgyny to the narrative, challenging traditional gender norms.

In April, Japan Society presents 'Director’s Company x2', spotlighting works from the pioneering independent production outfit, Director’s Company (1982-1992). Known as 'Direkan', this collective of filmmakers, including Kazuhiko Hasegawa, broke free from traditional studio constraints, paving the way for independent cinema.

The program features Kiyoshi Kurosawa's 'Bumpkin Soup', a surreal exploration initially deemed too strange for release, and Sogo Ishii's cult classic 'The Crazy Family', celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Screenings will be held at Japan Society’s headquarters, offering audiences a chance to experience cinematic treasures in a landmarked setting. Ticket prices range from $8 to $16, with discounts available for students, seniors, and Japan Society members.
