'Japan Sinks 2020': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Netflix's disaster anime series
Netflix has a new disaster anime coming to screens worldwide in July. 'Japan Sinks 2020' is based on the 1973 novel 'Japan Sinks' by Japanese writer Sakyo Komatsu and it will tell the story a catastrophic natural disaster affecting the East Asian nation.

Plot
The original novel talks about a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the 1970s that caused Japan to sink beneath the waves. The anime will shift the story to the present day and will focus on the Mutō family. The four members of the Mutō family, including siblings Ayumu and Gō, are in Tokyo when an earthquake hits. The series will chronicle the family's attempt to escape the destruction of the country while disaster upon disaster builds around them.

Cast
'Japan Sinks 2020' stars the vocal talents of Reina Ueda as Ayumu Mutō, Tomo Muranaka as Ayumu's brother Gō Mutō, Yuko Sasaki as the mother Mari Mutō, and Masaki Terasoma as Ayumu and Gō's father Kōichirō Mutō. Other cast members include Hiroyuki Yoshino, Nanako Mori, Kensho Ono and Umeji Sasaki.

Masaaki Yuasa
Yuasa is a Japanese animator, storyboard artist, screenwriter and director who has directed 'Japan Sinks 2020'. He is best known for his work on 'Kaiba', 'The Tatami Galaxy' and 'Devilman Crybaby'. The new series has been created by Yuasa's Science SARU studio, with Pyeon-Gang Ho credited as series director. Toshio Yoshitaka ('Dragon Ball Super') has provided the script for the series while musician Kensuke Ushio has composed the music. The character designs were created by Naoya Wada with Ken Hashimoto serving as the color key artist. Toshikazu Kuno is the compositing director of photography, Eriko Kimura is the sound director and Kiyoshi Hirose is in charge of editing.

A trailer for 'Japan Sinks 2020' was released by Netflix on May 28. It presents the basic premise of the show and introduces the audience to Ayumu, a track athlete, and her family.
