Spoilers for 'Japan Sinks 2020' Season 1

There's a new anime series on Netflix giving fans a heavy dose of the feels. Based on the 1973 novel 'Japan Sinks' by Japanese writer Sakyo Komatsu, 'Japan Sinks 2020' is the story of an epic cataclysm that rains destruction on the nation, causing the Japanese islands to sink beneath the waves.

Told through the eyes of the Mutō family, this Science SARU production is a deeply emotional story that guides the audience gently into the most heartbreaking situations possible. Fans who have managed to watch the series are already taking to Twitter to discuss the emotional impact of this disaster anime.

"God. Japan Sinks 2020 on Netflix only takes about 9 minutes into the first episode to get super depressing. #JAPANSINKS2020," one fan tweeted. Another fan wrote, "#6 of #JAPANSINKS2020 is by far the best episode of the series. Like it had enough suspense, enough shock and enough feels. Although I expected it to happen, to see how it actually played out was heart-wrenching, to say the least. Such an awesome series. 👍"

The show really doesn't stop with the emotional blows even till the very last episode.

"So I Spent All Day Watching Japan Sinks 2020 on Netflix 🔥🔥 ! Man, They Put Through Them Emotions Heavy till The End. I felt every loss bruh Damn🥺 🤞🏽👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 #JAPANSINKS2020," a fan commented.

Another fan declared, "Crying as I see any image related to #JAPANSINKS2020 is my current mood. I don't even have more tears to cry at this point!!!"

Ultimately though, 'Japan Sinks 2020' isn't some kind of soap opera or tearjerker. It's a very touching story about overcoming loss and finding hope even in the most desperate times. As one fan put it, "#JAPANSINKS2020 is a story about hope and moving forward. While not tonally consistent, it tells it with raw emotion and imagery with hidden meanings and messages beneath a subtext of the island nation sinking into the pacific. Give it a watch; it's really good! #anime"

'Japan Sinks 2020' is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
