NFL Network reporter Jane Slater sparked anger when she took to Twitter to announce that her team was reportedly searching for an unpaid intern on Monday, March 1.

The 40-year-old Slater, according to reports, had earlier admitted that her family had helped her financially, especially Uriah "Ray" Shockley, her grandfather, who is the retired president of Wolf Brand Chilli. Many took to Twitter to respond to her tweet noting that people are not "as fortunate" as her and can't work without pay. There are two sides to every social media storm, and so the Texas-based Slater had many who defended her as well.

'She could afford to intern for free'

Slater's initial tweet about the internship read, "Broadcast journalism students: exciting internship opportunity for you. Can you set up well lit zoom/Skype calls, record, edit them and want access to the league’s top draft prospects? It’s not with @BobbyBeltTX and I but it is in the DFW area. Unpaid. Great experience. Inbox me."

One user responded to Slater, "Good job. Do you need on my back or do you want to further remind everyone what a hard worker you are? Everyone should work for free just like you because yay Jane Slater. The check mark obviously isn’t enough self-importance is it?"

Another wrote, "Jane Slater is the exact kind of white woman I encountered time and time again during my early years in media and PR. Of course you could afford to work for free - your parents paid the bills. I could work myself to death; but if the money isn’t there, then it isn’t there."

People wasted no time bringing Slater's rich grandfather into the mix. "Jane Slater was completely sponsored by her rich grandfather. That’s great for her, but I’m not interested in her telling people they should intern for free like she did," added another user.

Another added, "Jane Slater also comes from a suburb where median family income is double the national average. Family money is long - her grandfather served as president of Wolf Brand Chili, which declared itself the official chili bowl of TX. She could afford to intern for free."

Jane Slater responds to media storm

After her initial tweet sparked a Twitter storm, Slater put out multiple tweets addressing the situation. "I posted an opportunity for an unpaid internship and I’m amazed the comments I get. It’s not even for me. It’s for someone else and I would have jumped at it in college. I had 3 unpaid internships in school, double majored and had a job. SMH," she wrote in one tweet.

In another thread, she said, "So when students reach out & ask me to mentor them I should say sorry I deserve to be paid for my time? You guys are really reaching here. I get so many and I was one of them saying how can I learn, shadow or get access. That’s what this was in the purest form."

She added"This was not 9-5 and 40 days a week it was a cool experience I thought a college kid could benefit from when talking to someone about enhancing their media access in a pandemic to help athletes and their message. Something they didn’t budget for. 2x a week maybe for 6 weeks."

Lastly, she tweeted, "To the people shaming me for my hardworking grandfather and parents who instilled a similar work ethic to achieve success, you are rotten. You have no idea about my childhood or my family but it’s not even close to the picture you all paint. Very ugly people on this app."

She then later tweeted two pictures of what looks to be a list titled, 'I will never run from a debate and always hope to learn something through engaging with people on this site. So a few thoughts", writing, "I have listened, engaged & now have some food for thought. Let me explain this “unpaid internship”, how we all got here in the comments section & what I’ve learned. Twitter isn’t the place but good & bad I always hope to learn something & hope you do too."
