LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jane Fonda, 85, recently graced ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ with Lily Tomlin where she claimed Jennifer Lopez “cut open across” her eyebrow during the ‘Monster-in-Law’ slap scene and “never apologized." The ‘Barbarella’ star, when asked about her memories from the 2005 rom-com by the host Barrymore, said, “Well, ok, the thing that comes to mind right away is, we have a slapping scene. I slap her, she slaps me, I slap her,” talking about Jennifer Lopez.

In her characteristic humorous manner, the seven times Golden Globe winner then said, “And so, when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow. You know, she’s never apologized."

'She’s such a gangster b**ch. I just love her'

Even though Lopez is yet to make a comment on Fonda’s claims, she released a video on her Youtube channel in 2019 depicting her experience of working with the two times Oscar-winning actress. Talking of the iconic slap scene, the ‘Maid in Manhattan’ star said, “I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way, really,” and continued to take a subtle dig at Fonda's character as she said the yesteryear’s star 'very much' resembled her mother-in-law.

"Her character was very much like her and my character at the time was very much like me,” reminisced Lopez. She further continued to praise her onscreen mother-in-law by saying, “I was so afraid of her and she was so brave and like, 'Just hit me. Don’t worry about it, it’s going to be fine.'"

Lopez also went on to describe how it escalated from a harmless back-and-forth to a full-fledged slap battle. Lopez then candidly added, “The next thing you know she really went for it on one of those slaps." Talking about the iconic scene, Lopez added, “The scene took on a life of its own in a way that we never imagined. I don’t even think we were supposed to slap each other."

Lopez then added how the slap got Fonda some purple blisters on her eyebrows. But she also insisted at that time that she did indeed apologize to the veteran Hollywood star, “I was like, "Oh, so sorry." And she was like, "It’s fine. It’s fine. It was a freaking purple blister that was sticking out and she didn’t care."

Lopez then concluded the segment by showing her adoration for her former co-star, “She’s such a gangster b**ch. I just love her."

'Monster-in-Law' marks Jane Fonda's return to acting

The movie marks Fonda’s return to acting after taking a career break of 15 years since ‘Stanley & Iris’ in 1990. The movie revolves around a couple Charlie (Lopez) and Kevin (Michael Vartan) who fall in love and want to get married. But all is not rosy for the young lovers as Kevin’s mother, the eponymous ‘Monster-in-Law’ Viola (Fonda) doesn’t like the alliance. A television presenter turned talk show host, who has recently been snubbed by her channel for a younger woman, feels she would lose her son too. Thus the epic battle ensues which leads to the iconic slapping scene during the wedding in the movie. In the end, the ‘monstrous’ mother-in-law understands her mistakes and makes amends with her son’s new wife, thus giving the movie a happy ending.

Talking about the film in ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’, Fonda said in 2015, “I thought, ‘People are going to come to the movie to see J.Lo, Jennifer Lopez, but they’ll rediscover Fonda,’ and that’s what happened.”
