A finale Easter egg in 'Stranger Things 5' may have quietly teased Netflix's next spin-off
The epic journey of 'Stranger Things' finally ended on a satisfying note, with the Hawkins kids successfully defeating Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and shutting the Upside Down forever. With Vecna's dark shadow removed from the town for good, the characters peacefully embrace their lives and move forward. However, despite the finale tying up most loose ends, there is still one hint that suggests a 'Stranger Things' spin-off may be in the works.
In the series finale, Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) go on a long-anticipated date at Enzo's. Hopper then proposes to Joyce and mentions moving to Montauk, New York, a deliberate reference to an early sci-fi horror concept called 'Montauk' that the Duffer Brothers created before 'Stranger Things'. The name-drop in the finale acts as a nod to fans familiar with the show's origins and could hint at a potential spin-off centered around 'Montauk'.
The Duffer Brothers also confirmed that the 'Montauk' reference in the finale was a deliberate nod to the show’s original concept, explaining in a Netflix Tudum interview that the final Hopper and Joyce scene had long been planned to signal a fresh start for the characters. "That final scene with them [Hopper and Joyce] had been planned for quite some time. It's very difficult what Hopper went through, especially with Eleven, and we liked the idea of him and Joyce having an opportunity to start a new chapter in their lives […] And, of course, we did the Montauk shout-out [where Hopper has a job offer] because the show was originally going to be set in Montauk. It felt like nice little wink to the superfans of the show who were aware of that nugget."
Notably, the 'Montauk' reference may be more than a simple Easter egg, potentially setting up a future spin-off. Given how central the original 'Montauk' concept was to the show's creation and its 1980s-inspired tone, revisiting it wouldn't be surprising, especially with an animated spin-off, 'Stranger Things: Tales from '85', already on the way, making a Montauk-focused offshoot feel increasingly plausible.
Not only that, despite a reveal-heavy final season, 'Stranger Things' leaves several mysteries unresolved, including Vecna's full plan, the Mind Flayer's true motives, and aspects of the military's involvement with the Abyss. A potential 'Montauk' spin-off could shift focus to a new secretive town and revisit the government conspiracy angle, drawing inspiration from the real-life Montauk Project theory.
