GLENDALE, ARIZONA: Sunny Hostin came under fire on Monday, January 13, for speaking about race and color in the context of NFL players. 'The View' co-host reportedly said, "Black quarterbacks can lead teams,” referring to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who led their teams this season at Super Bowl LVII and became the first Black QBs to face off in the game.

Hostin said, "The only thing that would have made it better for me is, you know, finally we know that Black quarterbacks can lead teams and are smart enough to lead teams." When co-host Whoopi Goldberg said that she's "always" known that and said, "That was never a question. It takes people a minute to catch up," Hostin responded, "We knew that," per Fox News.

Mahomes became the third Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl in 2020 after Williams in 1988 and Russell Wilson for the Seattle Seahawks in 2014, per CNN. Hurts made his Super Bowl debut against Mahomes, who enrolled at the University of Texas as a redshirt freshman in 2015 and the following year, played for the Texas Longhorns as a quarterback before joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, as per Metro League.

Is Patrick Mahomes Black?

Born on September 17, 1995, Mahomes' mother, Randi Martin, is White and his father, Pat, is Black. Mahomes' father was an MLB pitcher from 1992 to 2003 and played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburg Pirates.

Martin has worked as an event planner at Hollytree Country Club since 2005, and is also involved with the children's charity Variety KC. The 27-year-old's parents were married from the late '90s until their divorce in 2006, per PEOPLE.

Speaking about his heritage with regard to people online who claimed he was "not full Black," Mahomes told GQ, "I've seen how people, on Twitter, have tweeted and said, 'Oh, you're not full Black.' But I've always just had the confidence and believed in who I am. And I've known that I'm Black. And I'm proud to be Black. And I'm proud to have a white mom too. I'm just proud of who I am. And I've always had that confidence in myself."

Outspoken about racial injustice

Mahomes has always been outspoken about this subject. In July 2022, he said, as per Bleacher Report, “weird” criticisms were thrown at him and other Black quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals. He said, "Obviously, the Black quarterback has had to battle to be in this position that we are to have this many guys in the league playing. Every day, we're proving that we should have been playing the whole time. We've got guys that can think just as well as they can use their athleticism. It's always weird when you see guys like me, Lamar, Kyler kind of get that on them when other guys don't. But at the same time we're going out there to prove ourselves every day to show we can be some of the best quarterbacks in the league."
