A darker, star-studded reimagining of Dickens' classic, 'Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol', will see Johnny Depp lead a haunting new journey of redemption

A new cinematic spin on one of literature's most enduring holiday tales is officially taking shape. A fresh adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', titled 'Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol', has unveiled its ensemble cast. At the center of the project is Johnny Depp, who will take on the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge. The film will be directed by Ti West, a filmmaker best known for 'Pearl', 'The Innkeepers', and 'The Sacrament', suggesting that this version of 'A Christmas Carol' may lean more heavily into its ghostly and psychological elements than previous adaptations.

Supporting Depp is a notable lineup that includes Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin, Charlie Murphy, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, and Ellie Bamber, as per SSBCrack. While official character assignments have not yet been confirmed, industry chatter points to Grint stepping into the role of Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s kind-hearted and loyal clerk. The cast expands further with the addition of Andrea Riseborough, Ian McKellen, and Tramell Tillman. McKellen's involvement, in particular, has fueled speculation about whether he may portray one of the supernatural figures who guide Scrooge through his journey.

However, the filmmakers are keeping all character details tightly guarded for now. Unlike many traditional retellings, 'Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol' is said to emphasize the story's origins as a ghost story set squarely in Dickensian London. The film will reportedly immerse viewers in a shadowy, period-accurate version of the city, leaning into the eerie encounters with the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. These spectral visitations force Scrooge to confront painful memories, harsh truths about his present life, and the bleak legacy he risks leaving behind. The screenplay comes from Nathaniel Halpern.

Emma Watts is producing the film, with Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, Adam Bohling, and David Reid serving as executive producers. Together, the creative team appears focused on crafting a version of 'A Christmas Carol' that honors Dickens' original themes while giving the material a more introspective edge. The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on November 13, 2026, a prime pre-holiday slot that could allow it to build momentum heading into the Christmas season. While production details remain largely under wraps, the combination of star power, a distinctive director, and a classic story with built-in audience familiarity has already sparked major buzz.

Notably, 'Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol' is not the only major reinterpretation of Dickens' novella in development, according to Deadline. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. announced its own reimagining of the story, with Robert Eggers attached to direct and Willem Dafoe set to portray Scrooge. With multiple high-profile adaptations on the horizon, Dickens' tale of greed, guilt, and redemption is once again proving its timeless appeal. As 'Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol' moves closer to production, audiences will be watching closely to see how this ambitious new version reshapes a story that has been retold for generations.
