VALLEJO, CALIFORNIA: 'American Nightmare' is a true crime series based on the abduction case of Denise Huskins in 2015. Divided into three elaborative episodes, the docu-series premiered on Netflix on January 17, 2024.

Directed by Bernadette Higgins and Felicity Morris, the Netflix series has an audience score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

What happened to Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn?

On March 23, 2015, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, living in Vallejo, California, found themselves in a compromising situation as an intruder broke into their house. It is alleged that the couple was tied down, blindfolded, and drugged before the invader took away Huskins for ransom.

The next day, Quinn managed to free himself and promptly reported the abduction to authorities. Surprisingly, the authorities saw Quinn as the main suspect in his girlfriend's disappearance.

The kidnapper transported Huskins in the trunk of Quinn's car, covering a distance of 400 miles to Huntington Beach, CA, as per Time Magazine. He attempted to establish contact with Quinn for ransom negotiations through phone and email.

However, the attempts went in vain as Quinn was in police custody and his phone was on airplane mode as per the protocols.

When Huskins was released by the kidnappers two days later, she disclosed that she was subjected to sexual assault and drugs. Instead of carrying out a thorough investigation, the police reportedly blamed the couple for orchestrating a kidnapping hoax.

Did Denise Huskins get justice?

After enduring months of accusations suggesting their involvement in orchestrating Huskins' abduction and assault, coupled with the haunting fear of potential assailants still roaming free, a chilling incident in Dublin, California, approximately 40 miles south of Vallejo, marked a pivotal turn in the case.

On June 5, 2015, an attempted kidnapping unfolded, mirroring the harrowing ordeal of Huskins and Quinn. Yet, this time, the targeted couple valiantly repelled the intruder, who accidentally left behind his phone amidst the chaotic struggle.

Dublin authorities swiftly tracked the intruder's cellphone to a woman, who revealed it belonged to her son, Matthew Muller, a former US Marine and alumnus of Harvard Law School.

During the investigation, it was found out that Muller had a history of similar home invasions and assaults across the Bay Area, and ultimately faced federal charges of ransom kidnapping in Sacramento.

Muller's admission of guilt resulted in a daunting 40-year prison sentence. Subsequently, he faced additional charges in Solano County pertaining to the assault of Huskins, alongside robbery, burglary, and the false imprisonment of Quinn, culminating in a 31-year state prison term. He serves both sentences concurrently, according to Forbes.

Muller stands as the sole individual charged in connection with the case while Denise and Aaron stand to their statement that there were multiple perpetrators.

What happened to Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn after the verdict?

The couple filed a defamation case against the City of Vallejo and took home $2.5 million in an out-of-court settlement. However, they continue to advocate against the department's misconduct and negligence.

The traumatic incident brought the couple closer and they got married in 2018. They are blessed with two daughters.
