Is 'Alaska Daily' based on a true story?
The series follows Swank's Eileen Fitzgerald, a journalist who shifts base from New York to Alaska to get a fresh start. However, it all goes south for the investigative reporter in Anchorage when she opens a cold case in which a native American woman goes missing as a teen and was later found to be killed. Fitzgerald goes deeper into the rabbit hole only to uncover a darker conspiracy.
While the characters in the show are fictional, the show, per Cheatsheet, is said to take inspiration from real-life cases where indigenous women in Alaska go missing. To add more depth to the show, Kyle Hopkins and Ryan Binkley, two real-life reporters at Anchorage Daily News serve as executive producers.
The official logline reads, "From the mind of Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), Alaska Daily stars Hilary Swank as Eileen Fitzgerald, a fiercely talented and award-winning investigative journalist who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace to join a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage on a journey to find both personal and professional redemption. Tom McCarthy is the creator and executive producer. Hilary Swank, Melissa Wells, Bert Salke, Kyle Hopkins (Anchorage Daily News), Ryan Binkley (Anchorage Daily News), and Peter Elkoff, who will also serve as showrunner, are executive producers on the series. The pilot episode is written and directed by Tom McCarthy."
Alaska Daily' premieres in the US on Thursday, October 6, at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC.
