'I say this a lot and I mean it': Michelle's sweet response as Barack Obama wishes wife on 59th birthday
Michelle Obama turned 59 on Tuesday, January 17, and celebrated with her husband Barack Obama, 61. The former president took to his Instagram to dedicate a sweet message to the former first lady on her special day. “Happy birthday, @MichelleObama. You make every day brighter — and somehow keep looking better!” he captioned the post, alongside a picture of the two cuddling with his arms around her as they watch the sunset from their balcony.
Michelle, for her part, commented on the Instagram post with a red heart emoji and a kiss emoji. She reposted the snap on her Instagram Story and added a “love you” sticker. Only a few hours later, Michelle tweeted a thank you message for all the love and support she received that day. "Thank you all for the birthday love," she wrote. "I say this a lot, and I mean it — I love you back, and I am so grateful for you supporting me during every step of my journey," she wrote, concluding with a red heart symbol. The couple shares two daughters, Malia, 24, and Sasha, 21 together.

The couple, who tied the knot in 1992, celebrated three decades of their marriage in October 2022. The 44th president wrote a sweet anniversary message that included a carousel of photos of them over the years on Instagram. The slideshow included a photo of himself resting his head on Michelle's shoulder while sitting at the beach. Another snap showed their names engraved in a heart in the sand. He also added a black-and-white wedding photo. “Miche, After 30 years, I’m not sure why you look exactly the same and I don’t. I do know that I won the lottery that day—that I couldn’t have asked for a better life partner. Happy anniversary, sweetheart!” he captioned the post.
Michelle revealed in her book 'The Light We Carry' that their love for each other "is not perfect," however, it is "real and we're committed to it." She further opened up about her marriage to Barack, during a REVOLT roundtable while promoting her book. “We don’t talk about how much work is required and how hard it is even when you are madly in love with the person, even when everything works out right,” Michelle said. She added, “People think I’m being catty by saying this — it’s like, there were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband,” Michelle added. “And guess when it happened? When those kids were little… I would take 10 bad years over 30. It’s just how you look at it. And people give up… ‘Five years; I can’t take it.’”
