The trailer for HBO's upcoming limited series 'I Know This Much Is True' starring Mark Ruffalo in a double role will leave you with a heavy heart.

Based on Wally Lamb's novel of the same name, the six-episodic drama follows twin brothers Thomas and Dominick Birdsey. Thomas is a paranoid schizophrenic and Dominick suffers from PTSD.

The series follows the story of their sacrifice, betrayal and forgiveness through different points in their lives. Here is everything you need to know about the limited series: 

Release date

'I Know This Much is True' will premiere on May 10, 2020, on HBO. 

Plot

According to the official synopsis of the HBO limited series, "Based on the 1998 bestselling novel by Wally Lamb, adapted and directed by Derek Cianfrance, this limited series follows the parallel lives of identical twin brothers, played by Mark Ruffalo. A family saga, it tells a story of betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness set against the backdrop of 20th-Century America."

The last time Ruffalo was seen on television, it was for his role as a gay writer and activist in HBO's television movie 'The Normal Heart', a role for which he won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor in a TV Movie. The actor is best known as Hulk aka Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films 'The Avengers', 'Avengers: Age of Ultron', 'Thor: Ragnarok', 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Avengers: Endgame'.

Leo plays the role of Thomas and Dominick's mother. The actress is known for her work on 'All My Children' and 'Homicide: Life on the Street'.

As Sheffer, O'Donnell will be playing the role of a social worker at the Hatch Forensic Institute where Thomas is staying. The actress is best known for her own syndicated daytime talk show 'The Rosie O'Donnell Show', which won several Daytime Emmy Awards.

As Dr Patel, Panjabi will play Thomas' new psychologist. The actress is known for her role of Kalinda Sharma on 'The Good Wife', a role for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award, and Mya Rya on 'Life on Mars'.

Creators

The six-episode limited series based on the 1998 novel by author Wally Lamb is written and directed by Derek Cianfrance. The series is executive produced by Ruffalo and Cianfrance alongside Ben Browning, Glen Basner, Wally Lam, Gregg Fienberg and Anya Epstein.

A very emotional trailer takes us through the difficult lives of Dominick and Thomas. Thomas cuts his own hand off believing that his sacrifice will end the Gulf War. In the trailer, in one the scenes, Ruffalo as Thomas is seen with just one hand being held back by hospital guards. The series revolves around the repercussions of Thomas' actions.
