In September 2020, Sullivan shared a photo on Instagram to promote her upcoming single, 'Lost One', and it revealed her 50lb weight loss. While the iconic singer’s picture showcasing her drastic transformation garnered more than 173,000 likes, it also sparked a debate over her new slimmer physique.
Although many of her fans praised the singer, she was also called out by some critics who said she looked “sickly”. She responded to the trolls through an Instagram story, writing: “Last week some people dragged me saying I look sickly. I’m honestly a size 12. 180 lbs,” she wrote.
“There’s nothing skinny abt me but my neck. I’m 5’8 however, so I sometimes photograph a little leaner than I am. But I ain’t skinny and that was never my goal. My goal was to support my mother through her battle with cancer by going vegan with her and, in turn, it helped me as well. And I feel really good. I have a lot of things to work on in my journey and I’m not nearly the model for health and fitness…But I’m trying. And I’ll continue to do so with my momma! Bless y’all. Love y’all," she added.
Healthline has described the Vegan Diet as "a diet based exclusively on plant foods may, in some cases, increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies." The website has also stated that people on a vegan diet tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI) than those following other diets.
The researchers behind a 2015 study reported that vegan diets were more effective for weight loss than omnivorous, semi-vegetarian, and pesco-vegetarian diets, as well as being better for providing macronutrients. Here is how Sullivan used to look before her weight loss.
Sullivan often posts about her mother's chemotherapy and throwback pictures with her. Last month, she posted, "I didn’t know whether to share this or not... but this is my heart! For anyone who’s sent me messages asking abt how she’s doing.. we’re doing great! Still in the fight but not where we used to be. All cancers are a journey but I feel in my heart we’re on the otherside! Prayers for everybody in whatever stage you’re in. Ur not alone!" On her mother's birthday, she posted a throwback picture and wrote, "My Joi... U hold the biggest space in the deepest part of my heart! I love you beyond this world and I pray for you everyday! I am An extension of all God created in you! I’m grateful To have ur blood running thru me beCuz ur all I’ve ever wanted to be like. Continued prayers for healing, and an overflow of love and happiness in ur life! I Love you mommy! Happy bday grllllll"
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Sullivan’s net worth is $7 million. However, this is an estimate and may be inaccurate. Regardless, she has had multiple successes as a performing artist. On one of her earliest on-stage appearances, Sullivan sang with Stevie Wonder at his grandson’s birthday when she was just 13.
She also worked with Missy Elliott in 2007 and released her #1 debut single 'Need U Bad' in 2008. By 2010, Sullivan had earned seven Grammy nominations and written songs for Jennifer Hudson and Mary J Blige.
