Harry Styles' Queer mask slips: Singer's comments on 'gay sex' spark backlash from community
LONDON, ENGLAND: In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, singer Harry Styles caused controversy when he made a bizarre comment about the portrayal of gay sex in movies. The global icon spoke about his new film 'My Policeman,' in which he plays a homosexual police officer who hides his sexuality in the 1950s interaction.
Styles said, "So much of gay sex in the film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it." Further, he added, "I would imagine, some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay, and [director Michael Grandage] wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive."

According to DailyMail, Harry also explained that he is still figuring out his sexuality, which is why he refuses to conform. Recently, the 'Watermelon Sugar' singer got into trouble for not disclosing his sexual orientation. In an April 2022 interview with Better Homes & Gardens, he said, "I am very open with my friends, but this is my personal experience; it's mine," he told the magazine.
"The whole point of where we should be heading, which is toward accepting everybody and being more open, is that it doesn't matter, and it's about not having to label everything, not having to clarify what boxes you're checking." The netizens also labeled him to be 'queer baiting.' The term refers to a situation where someone likes the aesthetics of queer culture without committing to identifying with LGBTQIA+ culture. However, the singer is currently dating Olivia Wilde.
'Stop cosplaying as gay'
Social media was quick to respond to the comment made by the former 'One Direction' artist. Famous journalist, Benjamin Butterworth tweeted, "Harry Styles needs to stop cosplaying as gay. Quit toying with us and our experience for your own commercial exposure." Another user commented, "I'm sure he means well but this is disrespectful on so many levels. Not least of all that he's a heterosexual mansplaining how gay relationships ought to be depicted to gay people, but he's also discrediting the works of queer directors who have shown gay relationships in films."
Later, a netizen tweeted, "I dont care if he discloses his sexuality or not, it’s his business. but if he isnt willing to publicly identify as lgbtq then he has absolutely no right to speak on how queer people showed be portrayed and speak over us on these issues." A tweet read, "i’d be very curious to hear where he is finding all of these rough gay sex scenes in film lol love hearing a straight man’s opinion on what gay sex in art should be though."
