Pop star Halsey, whose real name is Ashley Frangipane, has achieved yet another milestone in her fast ascending career with the release of her debut poetry collection titled 'I Would Leave Me If I Could'. The 'Without Me' singer took to Twitter and surprised fans with the announcement of the book when she, replying to a fan, wrote, "haha yes! And my BOOK (bookmark!) comes out in 2 days! and you’ll have to just see what 'insides full of jam' means!" The official announcement, which was accompanied by a short teaser, came back in October 2020 when the 26-year-old singer tweeted, "'I Would Leave Me If I Could' A Collection of Poetry. Pre-Order now // Available November 10th"

She also shared more thoughts on the release of her debut poetry collection, and at one point mentioned how nervous she is about revealing it to the world: "Truthfully, I’m nervous to the point of vomiting about my book coming out in two days lol. Those of you who have it early, thank you for guarding its contents for the time being. The excitement and fear are wonderful and unbearable."

Halsey's brush with poetry isn't new at all. In fact, the singer first gained online prominence as a Tumblr poet, according to her latest Vogue feature. The feature mentions that before her fame as a modern-day pop star, one of Halsey's breakup poem was reblogged 820,000 times on Tumblr. Speaking about 'I Would Leave Me If I Could', the singer says, "I'm not treating it like it’s this fucking opus. It’s no different to me than what I used to do on my Tumblr. I used to write poetry and post it on my blog every day." According to the feature, the book has poems about everything from the sharp realities of bipolar disorder to sexual assault.

Speaking about her poem 'Ordinary Boys' from 'I Would Leave Me If I Could', Halsey says, "The poem is about a guy that I knew I wasn’t supposed to be with, but I kept trapping myself in the relationship with him...In moments where I feel powerless, one of the ways that I gain awareness and control over a situation in my life is that I write about it. Once you’ve put someone down on paper, you’ve reduced them to a character, and they no longer have the power that they do in real life."

Reactions

Shortly after the release of her book, Halsey sent out a tweet asking her fans, "So. What do we think?" She received thousands of replies with one fan thanking her and saying, "thank you for pouring your heart and soul to us, Halsey. Thank you for allowing us to have this special connection with you and for being so vulnerable and so open. I love you," while another, sharing a selfie of herself with the book, wrote, "Me before even reading it, so yeah it’s amazing! It's beautifully written. Thank you so much! It’s my favorite book I've ever read!" A different fan shared similar sentiments and tweeted, "literally the rawest and most honest thing I’ve ever read. It’s absolutely spectacular, I hope you are so proud of yourself because this is truly a piece of art that deserves to be framed everywhere in the world for everyone to read."

One fan added, "I can't even put it into words but it just amazes me every single time how MUCH of your work speaks to me in so many ways, especially today, it made me feel so seen & less alone and I truly wanna say thank you for putting this out! and I LOVED listening to you talking about it," while a fan expressed, "shoutout Halsey for trusting us every single day with her most personal and meaningful thoughts I'm so grateful she feels safe enough to do that with us. I love her so much." Tweeting about Halsey's live stream to talk about the book, a different fan said, "Just watched the stream and wow. I lost it when you said the book is for people who don’t trust themselves because that’s a reality I face every day. 'I Would Leave Me If I Could' will now forever be my place of comfort for years to come! Thank you for being that place for us."

Halsey, despite the cancellation of her 2020 concert series due to the coronavirus pandemic, has had a busy year.
