Hailee Steinfeld is moving up and moving on in life. As a multi-talented actress and pop singer, she's certainly one of the rising stars in Los Angeles. And this time she's decided to kick off the new year with a resounding bang, and even had the soundtrack to match it.

On January 1, Hailee Steinfeld unveiled her latest song, the much-hyped 'Wrong Direction', on social media. "Hi 2020. wrong direction is out now," Hailee wrote on Instagram on January 1. And there's also an official lyrics video to go with it — just in case we got confused about who the song was taking a sly dig at!

Ever since the song's title was revealed last week, speculation had been rife that 'Wrong Direction' was going to be a thinly-veiled diss track at Hailee's ex-boyfriend, Niall Horan, of One Direction fame. And now the song's lyrics have undeniably confirmed those rumors. The couple split up in December 2018.

Hailee's new track is an emotional ballad that addresses a relationship that went wrong, and has Steinfeld crooning about how it hurt so bad to be falling in the "wrong direction".

Given that this song and its pointed lyrics come barely a year after her split from the One Direction singer, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what she's talking about here:
"I just hate all the hurt that you put me through.
And that I blame myself for letting you.
Lookin’ back, I probably should have known, but I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin’ alone.
Hold me with your worst intentions, paint it as a happy ending, every time you burn me down, don’t know how.
For a moment it felt like heaven, and it’s so gut-wrenchin’, fallin’ in the wrong direction."

Based on those lyrics, it seems that Niall really hurt Hailee with his infidelity. But apparently that wasn't the only problem — the lyrics go on to suggest that the subject of the song has a massive ego: “On my tip-toes, but I still couldn’t reach your ego, guess I was crazy to give you my body, my mind. Don’t know what I was thinkin’ ’til now.  Everyone thinks that you're somebody else, you’ve even convinced yourself."

Ouch, that sounds like it's gonna leave a bruise, Niall! You can watch the official lyric video here.
