'Grey's Anatomy' season 16: Release, cast, plot and everything you need to know about ABC's longest-running medical drama

The script will be penned by Shonda Rhimes and Ellen Pompeo will reprise her role as Dr Meredith Grey in the new season that is slated to start in September this year

'Grey's Anatomy',  the US medical drama was recently renewed by ABC for two more seasons making it the longest-running prime time drama overtaking the number of episodes by 'ER', an American medical drama television series created by novelist and medical doctor Michael Crichton that aired on NBC from September 1994 to April 2009. 'Grey's Anatomy' follows the journey of Dr Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and her team of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial, who face the challenge of making life-or-death decisions on an everyday basis. Here's what we know about the upcoming season so far

Release

Season 16 is slated to release this September in the US.

Plot

While season 16 does not have an official synopsis yet, the season 15 finale airs on May 16. It’s the 25th episode of the season, titled “Jump Into the Fog", and there a few characters who are most likely to die in the final episode. Owen Hunt, played by Kevin McKidd, is one of the characters touted to kick the bucket, while speculations are rife that two other characters Jo Karev (Camilla Luddington) or Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) might be the other two who may meet a tragic end.

Ellen Pompeo will continue to play Dr Meredith Grey, the lead character. Justin Chambers as Alex Karev, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr as Richard Webber, Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt, Jesse Williams as Jackson Avery, Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, Kelly McCreary as Maggie Pierce, and Giacomo Gianniotti as Andrew DeLuca, are set to return in the new season as well. According to Deadline, the show has upped three recurring characters, Chris Carmack, Jake Borelli, and Greg Germann as series regulars.

Writer/Director

Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer, and the series creator will pen the script for the upcoming season while Krista Vernoff will helm the series along with Grey's spinoff 'Station 19'.

Trailer 

While there is no official trailer on the sixteenth installment yet, we may get a bit of an idea soon after the season finale and here's hoping that ABC throws in a surprise promo of the new season.
