'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16 Episode 14 Review: Two breakups make this an unbearable episode

The episode had a few sweet moments between Amelia Shepherd and Maggie Pierce, but that's about it

What's the perfect recipe for a nail-biting 'Grey's Anatomy' episode? Breakups, hook-ups, some scandalous revelations, emotional drama with tear-jerking moments and a lot of bloodied surgeries. Throw in a stormy night too.

The latest episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' did not have the stormy night or hook-ups, but it had 'almost' everything else. As there is a forced crossover with Station 19, the bear attack victims come to Grey-Sloane (of course, where else would they go?). Drama ensues as it turns out that one of them is cheating on the other. Well, they pay a heavy price by the end of the episode. That's how the writers punish people.

However, there was a time when such an episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' would leave more of an impact. This one had its hard-hitting moments scattered throughout the episode. It's a little hard to be emotionally invested in many of the current dramas on the show. Andrew DeLuca is obsessing over his patient, Sussanne. He still can't seem to figure out what is wrong with her and is looking like a trainwreck.

Dr Riley doesn't seem to be too bothered about the state of his mental health, but Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is. She tries to advise him but he shuts her off. She does the unthinkable. She tells Bailey her concerns and takes him off the case. Long story short, DeLuca figures out what the problem with Sussanne is and oversteps Meredith to administer steroids on her. There's an ugly yelling match between him and Meredith, while the rest of the office gawks. They are used to this. The conclusion? MerLuca is over. For now.

That's not the only couple that's breaking up.

Creator Shonda Rhimes doesn't destroy hearts in half-measures. She goes all in.

Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) takes an unpleasant decision regarding Link (Chris Carmack). So Am-Link is over too.

'Grey's Anatomy' just went all 'Game of Thrones' over relationships in this episode. There is Jo and Alex Karev who are having issues too. Alex (Justin Chambers) is still in Iowa and is not responding to Jo at all. At the end of the episode, Meredith tries texting him but he isn't answering her either. Are we finally addressing Alex's exit from the show? Whew, about time. Can't wait to see how the writers will deal with the exit of this much-loved character. Currently, anything is better than hearing him just being randomly referenced without much explanation.

Jo was a pain throughout this episode, that's the long and short of it. She unintentionally stirs things up for Link and Owen, and you just want to throw a tranquilizer in her direction and say "Jo, SHUSH".

There was a sweet sisterly moment between Amelia and Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), and that was the good part of this episode. Jackson Avery and Maggie finally have their closure — but again, that story was never worth giving more than a few thoughts about.

This episode had a few worthwhile moments here and there, but it really was just another example of this season turning out to be a groggy drag. Bring Alex back. Stop the Station 19 crossovers.

'Grey's Anatomy' airs on ABC, Thursdays at 9pm.
