Boss Move! Grandma chases thieves after crashing her car into getaway vehicle during ram raid
CAMBRIDGE, NEW ZEALAND: A brave Cambridge grandmother gave the perpetrators a taste of their own medicine while she was making an early morning trip to the town centre on Monday, April 10, for coffee.
The old woman who requested not to disclose her name shared the story in which she saw one car rammed into the Spark shop in Victoria St and a getaway car in waiting.
The 63-year-old was driving along the mostly empty road when she thought to herself, "It’s not happening". She made an instant decision to drive over the median strip and then ram into the getaway car. The brave and certainly unexpected move prompted the thieves to flee from the store.

One of the thieves was a little guy
“They all came out of Spark like bees from a hive, yelling. I tried to reverse but couldn’t, so I hit the car hard again,” she said according to Cambridge News. She remembered that one of the thieves was “a little guy” slipping around in his sandals and falling on the pavement. "Builder’s crack – it was hilarious," she said.
The thieves were forced to get back into their car
The masked thieves dumped the freshly stolen goods and got back into the now damaged getaway car. However, it was not the end of the incident as they soon realized that they were being chased by the woman. But she recalled that she did not have her cell phone because it had fallen down the side of the couch the night before. Unfortunately, the woman eventually had to return to the Spark store and wait for the police to arrive.
The woman recounted how amid the incident she had worried that her husband would be disappointed to see the damage she had caused to her car. “He arrived and said it was worth it. I’m a grandmother and I work with youth; I do want people to know I’m not a vigilante.” The woman however admitted that the thieves would not feel proud to know that they were “chased out of Cambridge by a nana.”
Police say inquiries are ongoing and are encouraging anyone with information on the robbery to call 105. "Generally, police discourage people from intervening, as it puts them at greater risk of harm," the police said on the grandmother's bold decision to chase them. "We advise anyone who witnesses suspicious or unlawful behavior to report this as soon as they can so that police can respond."
Taupō MP Louise Upston posted a photo of the aftermath on social media, calling it a "sad end to the Easter Weekend". "This isn't New Zealand", she wrote.
