Freeform’s ‘Good Trouble’ Season 2B sheds light on several social issues through the lives of its characters. Be it for gender identity issues, discriminatory wage gap or Black Lives Matter, the drama series is playing a pivotal role in revitalizing television, creating more awareness.

In Episode 13, we see Malika (Zuri Adele) come face-to-face with her worst fear, upon realizing the consequences of her involvement in BLM.

Although Judge Wilson decides not to press charges against her for violating the restraining order, the city attorney wants to charge her over the felony, asking for a year of jail time.

However, an ill-fated Malika sees the last ray of light when she is presented with an option that could help her evade time in prison. She’s told that she could take up the plea deal to eliminate the charges against her, but she needs to serve 30 days in jail along with a penalty of 5,000 dollars.

But the plea deal alone doesn’t serve as a solution to all her problems, as there’s another condition imposed on her if she refuses to take her chances in the trial.

Her fellow activists tell Malika that taking up the plea deal would prohibit her from participating in any public gathering or protests in Los Angeles County.

Although Malika was initially convinced with the terms of the plea deal, despite fearing violence in prison, as an activist she isn’t willing to let go of the only purpose of her life: To fight for equal rights.

When she learns that the plea deal demands her to give up activism on the forefront, Malika decides to take her chances in trial saying she wouldn’t let them break or silence her.

While Malika’s major obstacle to pursuing her passion is her fight against the law, she also needs to consider its impact on her personal life. With Isaac unaware of the trouble Malika has gotten herself into, she has more than just one issue to deal with.

Malika may have a leg to stand on if her true intentions with the movement are considered. But will that alone stop her from suffering in the hands of the system?

Episode 14 of ‘Good Trouble’ Season 2B airs on January 29 on Freeform.
