Golden Globes 2023: 'House of the Dragon' wins Best Drama Series, beats 'Better Call Saul' and 'Severance'
BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: One thing that ‘Game of Thrones’ couldn’t do during its run is to win the Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes and it is still one of the most shocking moments in the history of the prestigious event. However, HBO will be very happy with this year’s event as ‘House of the Dragon’ won the Best Drama Series accolade at the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards. The win comes as a surprise for many as shows such as ‘Severance’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ were considered to be the favorites in the category.
‘House of the Dragon’ chronicles the journey of House Targaryen and how it became the most dominant kingdom in the world. Set two hundred years before the events of 'Game of Thrones', the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons". The show went on to become a roaring success and shattered several viewership records during its run. The finale of the show’s season one became the biggest finale night for an HBO series since the conclusion of ‘Game of Thrones’ and was watched by more than 19.8 million viewers.

The HBO series edged past shows such as ‘Better Call Saul’, ‘Severance’, ‘Ozark’, and ‘The Crown’ to win the accolade.
Showrunner Miguel Sapchnik accepted the award along with Emma D’Arcy and Milly Alcock and noted that he didn’t think that the series would win the trophy. He said, “As you can tell, I didn't think we were going to win so I didn't get ready. Thank you very much. This is amazing.”
He went on to thank his exceptional cast and HBO for trusting him and his team with such an enthralling story. Sapochnik added, “We had an amazing cast, absolutely stunning. I don't know what else to say. They were great. Hollywood Foreign Press, thank you very much. HBO, who entrusted us with their golden goose, it was worth it. One thing that I was going to say, which is really important is I noticed when we did the premiere in L.A., what everyone did they had this thing of relief rather than being excited and then they got excited. And it was really heart-warming to know that we actually tread in the footsteps of ‘Game of Thrones’. Because that was really one good show, so I thank you very much.”
‘Game of Thrones’ was for best drama series five times (2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018) and lost every single time. Peter Dinklage was the only actor who a Golden Globe for the series.
The show also stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emily Carey, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, and others in pivotal roles.
