'Give her a few months': Internet slams Brittney Griner after US Special Envoy calls her 'patriotic'
WASHINGTON, DC: As Britney Griner made her way back home from a Russian prison after nine months, she did not seek any solace in "me time." Rather, she wanted to talk. She was detained in February 2022 for possession of vape cartridges with cannabis oil and was sentenced to nine years in prison when found guilty. Griner's return was possible through a prisoner swap as Biden agreed to trade Viktor Bout and bring back the WNBA star home.
Roger Carstens, US Special Envoy who helped secure the basketball star’s release and bring her back to the US last week, recalled his conversation with the 32-year-old player. Griner said, "I have been in prison for 10 months now, listening to Russian. I want to talk." Referring to other people on the plane, she said, "But, first of all, who are these guys?” Castens told CNN, "She moved right past me and went to every member on that crew, looked them in the eyes, shook their hands and asked about them, got their names, making a personal connection with them. It was really amazing." The two-time Olympic gold medalist ultimately spent 12 out of 18 hours talking with others on the plane.

Carstens continued, "I was left with the impression this is an intelligent, passionate, compassionate, humble, interesting person, a patriotic person. But above all, authentic. I hate the fact that I had to meet her in this manner, but I actually felt blessed having had a chance to get to know her." However, the people are not amused by his high-profile prisoner swap. Griner has previously claimed that there should be no national anthems from the games as per AZ Central. In protest of the same, she remained in the locker room in one of the matches and hit the court once it was over. Hence, some people were ticked after Griner was called a "patriotic" person and slammed her immediately.

Another user said, "Yes she wants to be patriotic now but when she nailed for the national anthem that wasn't too patriotic" One more user wrote, "Patriotic now! Give her a few months and she'll be back to decrying the sins of America"
