Ali Wentworth reminisces her first date with George Stephanopoulos, says 'we were engaged two months later'

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: George Stephanopoulos and his wife Ali Wentworth have been together for over two decades and are still going strong. The couple met in April 2001 and got engaged two months later before eventually tying the knot in November. However, before realizing that they were meant to be, Wentworth was not willing to meet the TV host for their first date. 

Appearing on a podcast episode with Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue, Wentworth detailed how their first date went. The 'Head Case' actress recounted that she was suggested by a friend to meet with Stephanopoulos but refused the idea as she "grew up in politics." She did eventually go on the date with very low expectations. The actress said that she did not shave her legs or shower before the date as she had zero expectations. However, things changed by the end of it. “I’m telling you, by the end of lunch, done. We were engaged two months later," she said, as per US Weekly

How did the blind date go?

The 'Good Morning America' host also spoke about their first meeting with New York Times in November 2001. ”You know how when you go on a date and the first 15 minutes are on automatic pilot?” he said. ”About 15 minutes in, she just leaned in and said something, and we were suddenly in another place, in another universe, immediately. We went from strangers to friends to being in love in days.” The journalist recalled the date going so well that by the end of it, he did not want to live without his now wife of 22 years. 



 

When did Stephanopoulos and Wentworth get married?

Stephanopoulos was a bachelor until Wentworth came along into his life. While the couple had a quick engagement, the actress wondered why the former advisor was taking time to pop the question. Stephanopoulos, on the other hand, assured her that the pair would end up walking down the aisle. The two later get married at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City after two months of dating. “I knew within 24 hours, I would not ever dare risk losing her,” the news anchor told The New York Times on November 25, 2001. The couple welcomed their first daughter Elliott in 2002. Three years later, they had their second daughter, Harper. 



 

'We are hot for each other'

After marriage, Wentworth who previously resided in Los Angeles shifted to New York City because of her husband. Talking about her love life in her 2018 book 'Go Ask Ali: Half-Baked Advice (and Free Lemonade)'. “The lowest moment for me is when the time arrives for the fateful question: ‘How often do you and your husband have sex?’” she wrote in her memoir. “I have lost friends with this question,” she added. Wentworth confirmed in the book that her friends have reacted strongly when they hear just how active the couple’s sex life is. “The women gasp and scream like I’ve confessed that I shot my dog,” she joked. “One of them always slams her fist down on the table; a woman’s wine glass once smashed in her hand. I’m sorry! We’re hot for each other. Jesus!”



 

Stephanopoulos and Wentworth as parents

Speaking about how the couple is as parents, Wentworth said that there is a good balance between them. Wentworth told the New York Post that her husband was more of a disciplined parent and she was a helicopter parent, which had both pros and cons. Moreover, in arguments, the reporter confirmed that he is more calmer and logical while his wife is on the louder side. Through the years, Stephanopoulos has adjusted to his wife's outgoing character while Wentworth calls him a "high achieving husband." 



 

What is their secret to marriage?

The couple lives in a $6 million Manhattan apartment where they raised their two daughters. They both commit to having dinner together every night. Talking about their secret to marriage, Wentworth said that it was mainly humor. The couple shares a connection that even if someone told the actress that her husband was cheating on her, she would not leave it and laugh it off. She also loves how the family celebrates every milestone. They duly post about each other on their respective social media where they are seen going on dates and sharing intimate moments on their couch.
