'Float' Review: Robbie Amell and Andrea Bang's predictable romcom is let down by cliche-ridden plot
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Float’ directed by Sherren Lee and starring Robbie Amell and Andrea Bang is nothing but a casual comfort watch!
Amell plays the role of a hunky small-town guy named Blake, and Bang plays the role of a lost-in-life girl Waverly, who makes her way to said small town and finds herself at the doorstep of her aunt’s house.
If you are looking for a summer romance to put a little smile on your face and have the time to spare, then ‘Float’ might end up on your recommendations. Still, the movie overall has very little going on for it and doesn’t set itself apart from the usual romance movies that have been made over the decade.
‘Float’ has set itself up to sink
Waverly finds herself in a small town instead of facing her parents whom she hasn’t seen in over four years.
She is on the brink of starting a fabulous and demanding career, and before that, she needs to figure things out, what better way to do it than to learn how to swim with the help of a very attractive man yet slightly troubled man? That’s precisely the plot of Lionsgate’s recent movie, ‘Float.’
Much like other romantic movies, ‘Float’ also has several cliches that you will see coming at every turning point. The movie itself is pretty straightforward and lacks any plot twists that might eventually help redeem itself.
A girl and a boy cross paths, and he becomes her rescuer, saving her from drowning. Early every morning, he patiently teaches her how to swim. However, when the time comes for the girl to return home, the boy, burdened by the challenges of his own life, makes a false confession.
Despite this hurdle, he later takes a leap of faith by flying across the country, knocking on her door, and ultimately creating their own happily ever after.
Does ‘Float’ have anything to look forward to?
While the plot of ‘Float,’ and the acting by Robbie Amell and Andrea Bang is far from extraordinary, there is one thing the audience has to look forward to when it comes to Sherren Lee’s movie. No, it isn’t the rest of the cast, but instead the views.
Since ‘Float’ is set in a small town and there’s a lot of swimming, the views are worth looking forward to. However, do they redeem the movie? You will have to watch it to find out.
